Fuck yeah Apple. Might buy my first iphone now. Between this, their commitment to user privacy, and bringing back hundreds of billions from offshore and paying taxes on it... at least compared to everyone else, they're really turning into a conscious entity.

Hopefully they continue down this road.

i mean if youre paying 1200 for an iphone it should last 5+ years at least, and still perform well like a macbook would

I mean, that would require turning their business model upside down. You telling me they are suddenly going to become antiApple?

oh yes they do. i used to be in this industry, the margins on used tech equipment are insane, that's why carriers want you to lease a phone vs own one. they'll probably sell them to companies to deploy as work phones, part them out, sell them overseas in nations where people can't afford new iphones, etc

i still think a lot of this is marketing BS tho and a reaction to the fact that apple is having a hard time getting people to upgrade phones from their old iphone 6 or something because the common user just uses it for texting/emails/calls/etc. smartphones are still inherently disposable devices by design.

but they only did this because they got caught, don't act like it was pure benevolence on their part because they love America

let's use the iphone 5s as a base here.

it was released September 20, 2013. the most recent software is released today, september 2018. let's assume it will be dropped at the end of next year with the announcement of ios 13...

that means they've supported the phone for a whopping 6 years. that alone is impressive, even if they make no change with how they're treating software updates right now it's still more than enough.

most android phones won't be actively maintained and given security updates beyond year 1 or 2, much less 6 years.
