Battle Royale
-Run around for 20 minutes picking up loot
-Fight a guy for 0.03 seconds
-Run around for another 20 minutes
-Die to a shotgun grazing you from 500 meters away
-Waste cumulative hours in queues between matches
-Repeat the same tedious intro sequence over and over every match
-Throwaway matches that don't accomplish anything

MMOFPS
-Constant action everywhere
-Respawn points
-Intense combined arms combat
-Persistent objective rewards
-No time ever wasted in queues because the war never stops
-Don't lost 20+ minutes of work in a fraction of a millisecond
-Every accomplishment matters and fuels your faction's efforts towards conquering the world

But let's just keep copying the exact same Battle Royale template in EVERY game! Screw making an actual good game!

I used to like the original PlanetSide. Something about 2 didn't make feel the same though. But part of it was that it didn't run very good when i tried it

Optimization is still really bad in 2. They didn't utilize GPUs as well as they should have, because a 1070 should have zero problems but even low settings gives it trouble.

Big problem with PlanetSide 2 was the steamrolling. It was too easy to just roll more bodies and vehicles over the opponent and camp the outdoor spawn points. Lack of indoor combat and properly secured spawn points was a mistake. And having only one continent at launch, a boring wasteland, with nowhere to go because of unconquerable bases for each team.

I got burnt out playing EverQuest, so it's nice to turn off your brain and play a battle royale.

When did EverQuest become an FPS?

What happened to the classic DM, KotH, CTF and TDM games?

People lacked the skill and motivation to get good, so they play BR and Hero Shooters

Is something like unreal tournament a battle royale? I like that game more than call of duty and stuff. Never really bothered with the newer games besides Overwatch.

Then play an MMOFPS for 20 minutes.. not only will you get in faster but you will see more action in those 20 minutes

Because it isn't just play for 20 minutes, you can play a whole round.

Play a round of less action and more waiting for 20 minutes, or jump right into action and accomplish a whole lot in 20 minutes?

Why does your session need to be defined by a "round"?

Less commitment, at least as far as Fortnite goes. The matches can go for around half an hour if you get far enough, but for the most part you're dropping in, getting a few sneaky kills then getting ganked yourself. The impermanence of the game makes each victory that much sweeter, because you're coming out on top against 99 other players who started the game in the exact same way that you did. But like even then, the appeal of Fortnite is just to drop in and dick around for a few minutes - there's no pressure, you just do your best until you don't feel like playing matches any more. And the loading time between matches is a good way to reset your expectations and get ready for the next match.

Like sure, I played a bit of Overwatch once and it was okay - I'd consider buying it if I had a console that could run it - but given the game consoles I have and how fun I find Fortnite's gameplay loop, I'm really not that fussed. It hits the right centres of the brain when it comes to collecting loot and getting kills, and it's versatile enough to be a pretty strong co-op game with friends or something more akin to a singleplayer survival mode. And the non-committal nature of its gameplay loop makes it easy to drop in and drop out on a whim, which makes it a more appealing pick when you don't have a lot of time to play something. It's basically just another instance of "hardcore vs casuals" - why would someone play Ridge Racer when they could be playing Forza? Why would someone play Borderlands when they could be playing Battlefield? Because those games click with people better in comparison.

I used to play AssaultCube in high school, which was a CounterStrike clone - some of my favorite FPS memories was playing One Shot One Kill with snipers in this wide open courtyard area. Fortnite isn't the same, but it captures the same goofy vibe of those OSOK matches that other shooters can't quite match. I hear that OSOK is still around in Battlefield, but that's a much different beast and the maps are so big, y'know? But I digress.

I just want that non-committal goof-around game, not to be made to play a role and pretend like what I'm doing is making any sort of difference in the game world or not. I want shit that's just like a bunch of random internet assholes bunnyhopping around a small enclosed space shooting snipers at each other with 1 HP each. It's not the same, but Fortnite has a similar sort of chaotic energy to it - so people who are more responsive to that sort of atmosphere might be more receptive to the idea of playing a repetitive Deathmatch title than spending half an hour's worth of gaming time defending a payload.

Because I don't want to care about some persistent thing going on all the time.

Plus when you play specific rounds you can get specific wins and have a win count, and people like that.

You don't have to care about the bigger picture if you're jumping in for a short session. Just shoot people and have fun
