My completely uninformed shot in the dark is that American culture is highly individualistic with very little value placed in the group at the expense of the individual.

Japanese culture seems to promote the well being of a group over the well-being of an individual, so they would be less likely to riot and loot in those situations.

Theres also the fact that Japan gets hit with natural disasters like every third Tuesday so its shaped their national culture with responses to them. >_>

I'm guessing there's a higher poverty rate in the US

or the people in poverty in Japan are socialized to just grin and bear it like most things

maybe japan is even harsher on poor people than the US? kinda hard to imagine, but it might be possible

I don't know, when I hear looting, I generally think of people breaking into places and stealing stuff. Those guys took stuff, but it was outside the warehouse (no one illegally entered to take things) and it was most likely unsellable, even if it were recovered.

Looting here in America tends to be people people taking advantage of disasters to smash some windows and steal shit. I never see news stories on people taking washed up merchandise.

Well technically anything stolen is considered looting. I mean I don't see a link about the ATM stuff, but no doubt any country in the world would have looting no matter what. Just that I have literally never seen anything on the news about looting during emergencies in Japan before that article, which I don't even consider "standard" looting.

Seriously. Every place loots. Or do people think there's some place where the entire population is so pure that no one has never stolen a single thing? It just seems like some places do it to more...violent extremes. Like seeing the thugs break into the shoe store to steal Nikes. It was kind of funny seeing people defending that though, saying "Oh people need to steal to get by!". Like it was much more practical to steal $200 shoes than a few canned goods.

Because the west is all about themselves than the community or strangers, Japan's population is taught to value the community over the person for better or worse which comes with it's own brand of shitty behavior and actions. So they aren't saints just because during bad times they aren't looting.

It's probably cause Japanese (and most other countries) news media don't sensationalize the hell out of stuff like lootings or other things that makes their cities/country look bad or dangerous.

American news media tends to overcover & stretch everything to the point of "your probably gonna die or get robbed if you leave your house, or even stay cause this one common household item could actually be lethal watch our special report Tuesday at 10 (which we will do every year but act surprised about every time)".
There are cities where their crime rates are lower than they have been, yet the news media will portray everything as if it is the worst it's ever been.

Japan has functional emergency services. America doesn't. So people in a disaster zone are forced to break into closed shops to get food. Then the media sensationalizes that to "super-predator looters" when it's just people trying to survive.
