1. The character who was marketed as the star dies early in the movie. This would have been one of the first (if not the first?) movie to do this

2. The reveal that Norman's Mother is dead flips the entire movie on its head. There's no reason to believe there would be a twist with her at all. The movie works well enough as a horror movie as Norman as a weak son dealing with an insane old lady who is killing women he's attracted to. You see her in sitting by the window and Norman carrying her out of bed. When you find out the twist and think back to those scenes the movie becomes more creepy and sinister. She's a dead body displayed in the house as a living person. He has been doing this for years. It leaves that entire story to your imagination which adds more to the creepiness.

It's a shame basically everyone knows the twist before they even watch the movie these days. It's perfectly executed.

I think Batman vs Superman had a much better twist when Batman just starts murdering people.

I agree, too bad this was before Vince Vaughan became a good actor

Did Bate's Motel ever get this far?

Yes. In the last season.

They change things up a bit though. I only finished the show last night which is what inspired this topic. Still not sure how I feel about how they handled the Psycho plot.

What did they change?

In Bates Motel Norman falls into his 'Norma/Mother' personality to blackout things he doesn't want to deal with. Marion (played by Rihanna) arrives right when he starts confronting his alternate personality over it. Marion is having an affair with Sam Loomis. In Bates Motel Sam is married to a woman Norman is infatuated with.

The scenes between Norman and Marion play out in a similar way as they did in Psycho. However Marion doesn't end up getting stabbed in the shower. Norman realizes he's getting the urge to kill Marion, reveals to her that Sam is married and forces her to leave the motel.

Sam arrives looking for Marion and waits for her in her room. Norman decides to murder Sam in the shower as himself instead of Norma. The first time he ever does this. He confesses to murdering Sam to the Sheriff not long afterwards after being confronted by his brother.

Basically it is instead used as a moment for Norman to take control over his other personality and begin the endgame of the show.

Norman knows something is wrong with him, so he struggles with his brother so he can get killed in the process, and finally join his mom

The thing that annoys me most about Bates Motel is they never used the iconic music! I guess they didn't have the rights or something.

Norman Bates is such a creepy character in general. I think he's often overlooked as a horror villain.
