This is a user's PC, and while she's working at another workstation, I still need to get this one up and running. But it won't let me cancel it, and doing a hard reboot may screw the whole HDD up, since it's still working on stuff. Though reimaging it is a simple process, but I need to get her data for backup (I can't boot into the OS because it was caught in a loop, hence the startup repair).

I'd connect her HDD to another computer as an external drive. Then you can browse the contents and pull her User folder.

As many technological advancements as we've made why does it seem like I'm still using 90's software?

That's when you just pull the HDD and connect it externally to another PC.

Get one of these things - they're practically a life-saver:

Yeah, getting her data will be simple once I get in, but the issue now is the startup repair, since I did some reading and forcing it to end while it's [allegedly] repairing disk errors may corrupt the entire HDD.

Might be dead already. Is it making the click of death?

I feel it'll corrupt the OS more so than the entire HDD.

Either way, take the risk and rip it out. Waiting on this is only wasting your time and hers. If it works then great...if it doesn't then tell her the repair failed and the drive was dead the entire time. This is a good lesson to her about backing up her data.

Nope.

Yeah, that's moreso what I meant. A corrupt OS is an easy fix with a PC reimage, and her data should still be accessible since I have the tools needed to access it.

It's just weird that this apparently all started from her allegedly not being able to access the network (a helpdesk tech was assisting her over the phone, and supposedly the PC crashed in the process).

Yeah, this HDD is dead. It failed the diagnostic test, and I can't even get into it to access its files via Hiren's Mini XP (it slows down tremendously when trying to read the HDD, when no such thing happens if it doesn't see it at all, and eventually it states that the partition has not been formatted). The last thing I could do is use the tools to connect it to another PC, but I don't have much faith in that allowing me access.

We're moving to replace this PC completely. Sadly, it does seem like her files have been lost.

Yep. Thankfully, I make regular backups of my own personal files (I have two external HDDs, though one's a fair bit older), so the damage for me will be minimal in the event my own HDD goes out.
