The DC Universes Swamp Thing series wont be a kids-themed project, according to co-writer Gary Dauberman. Dauberman (best known for IT), who is co-writing alongside Mark Verheiden, told /Film that the live-action series will aim for a hard R-style rating due to the creative freedom they have on the streaming platform.

We always set out to make Swamp Thing as hard R as we could and go graphic with the violence, with the adult themes and make it as scary as possible, Dauberman said. Because were doing it through the DC streaming service, they really pushed us, although they didnt have to push hard, for us to go as extreme as we could. We really took our inspiration from the Alan Moore run in Swamp Thing, this landmark I think run. Fans of that series will know it gets pretty weird and extreme and scary.

He added, We really wanted to live up to that standard that Moore set up back in the 80s. Then of course it allows us, Swamp Thing himself looks incredible what Justin Raleigh and the guys over at Fractured are doing with the suit. So its going to look amazing and less of the man in suit that youve seen in the movie and the other TV show.

The live-action series is still at the pilot stage, and has not yet been ordered to series. Len Wiseman is directing the pilot, with a possible 2019 launch date for the show.

Tbf, the difference between this and Netflix or Hulu is that DCUniverse is also offering comics. DC fans have been waiting a long time for an equivalent to Marvel Unlimited (Marvel's digital comic service) and they're getting movies, shows and animated stuff to boot.

As a guy with a Batsymbol tattoo on his wrist, I hope not.
We get tons of Batman in all sorts of media, I'm actually glad they're using this platform to give other characters like Titans, Doom Patrol and Swamp Thing a time to shine.
Though that trailer and screenshots of Titans isn't doing them any favors

I always feel like I'm the only Batnut who doesn't like that show at all. I appreciate it for making Batman as popular as he is today and that's about it.
It's weird, I hate the camp in Batman '66 and at the same time I appreciate it in Brave and The Bold and those Adam West/Burt Ward animated movies.

yea but from what we have seen, it won't be as good as Marvel Unlimited. the comics are "rotating selections". I don't like the sound of that.

MU has like thousands upon thousands of comics and once a comic is added, it is there forever. and you can read like the entire history of Marvel on that app. DC it sounds like will have a fraction of what Marvel has. I was really looking forward to it too. it's the only part I care about it. but I lost my hype when they revealed the details and it started to sound bad

I might look again when it officially launches. but all I wanted to do was read the history of DC in order. right now I am doing that on marvel unlimited. you can sort by publication date and search year by year. so I am going through each year, and reading everything.

but if there is a rotating selection that's gonna be very hard or impossible to do what I wanted to do, with DC. maybe they will change it later and stop the rotation.

I mean, Alec Holland was never technically Swamp Thing. There is actually a big reveal in the Alan Moore stories about how he just a plant imprinted with the memories of Alec Holland.

That's what I'm talking about. It was canon that he was Alec in the movies. It was canon that he was Alec before Alan Moore got his hands on the series. It should've never been changed. That's like revealing that Bruce Wayne died in Crime Alley and that Batman just absorbed his memories.

But not really, though, because the best part of Swamp Thing was Moore's run and how it's Swamp Thing absorbing Alec's body that turns him into something between plant and animal.

It also dehumanizes the story. I can empathize with a man who became a plant, but not a plant who thought he was a man.

Also, Swamp Thing has one of the best origin stories. A scientist finds a miracle growth formula, then an altercation with a rival scientist causes him to be set on fire and flee to the swamp where he emerges as a swamp creature courtesy of that same formula. Why would you ruin that just to put a new spin on things?

Alan Moore is a great writer and nobody can take that from him, but sometimes you shouldn't fix what isn't broken.

I'd argue the opposite, actually. It shows that the environment is just as much a living thing as we are, and that our symbiotic relationship with it is important.

But, that's pretty much the most generic superhero story out there. It's basically Lex Luthor and Doom's story (at least the film interpretations). Moore's work took a generic horror comic and made it into something special. I'm usually a bit critical of Moore (I think the more freedom he gets, the more off the rails he goes), but Swamp Thing was some of his best work.

I mean, it's subjective, but by combining humanity with the Green, he becomes a bit more than fucking pond scum. I mean, this is literally a world with aliens, demons, animal humanoids and all sorts of other oddities, and we have no problem relating to them, so I'm not sure why the a humanoid plant makes any difference.
