I recently made a statement in Dragon Quest 11 thread about how someone thought Sylano was annoying. In that thread I said he is really cool but the way they present his extra flamboyant gay dimeanor makes him annoying. Although instead of gay I said queer.

I ended up getting modded for this with a warning but I never knew queer was a deragatory term so to the LGBT community I do apologize. I see queer as the mascot word on all the LGBT tv shows and thought it was the most socially accepted way to address that group. My bad.

Actually not being sarcastic. I didnt know queer was derogatory term and made this thread for awareness and to see the LGT opinion on the matter.

If queer is a derogatory term why do they themselves include it in their group? LGBTQ

Yeah I thought that too but thats why I'm not adding the q. Apparently the q stands for questioning for some.

Queer has been reclaimed by the LGBT community: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reappropriation
If you want to read up on what that means/entails.

That said, just because a word has been reclaimed by its group doesn't mean that it can't still be used as a pejorative or that it's always okay to say. Context and intent always matter.

Basically, it's like how black people as the intended recipients of the n-word can reclaim and use it, but no other people can use it. Same thing here, only LGBT people can reclaim it. That said, uses of it like "queer visibility/ representation" when discussing the tropes or lack of characters in media? That's one of those "everybody can use it in that context" type of deals.

Context is important, doubly so with words with histories of being slurs.

Flamboyant is enough. There's no need to add gay or queer after it as if flamboyance was inherent to them

Dude makes a topic admitting he offended people, got punished with a warning, comes here to apologize, and some of you are still treating him like shit. Smh. Fricking CE.

I mean yeah, it isn't great to say that, but a warning seems harsh. But whatever - I'm bi and I think flamboyantly gay characters are insufferable.

I guess queer is the gay nword

There are several words that have historically been used as anti-gay hate speech. 'Queer' is going through a kind of reclamation to refer to anyone who falls somewhere in the LGBT spectrum, but opinions on that are still super divided because older gay people still remember getting called 'queer' as they were being beaten in the streets, and their memories and experiences are 100% valid here. We can't just steam roll them. And the hateful use of the word 'queer' still pops up from time to time. It's fraught with history and context, that word. Now people mostly identify themselves as queer, or use it in highly general ways to refer to a demographic of 'not-straight and/or gender-conforming' people of a larger group ('queer persons of color, queer artists, etc.).
