Why are comic books so scared to make new original characters?

Why is it all "Let's just give this character tits and make this one black."

That's not new, it's just pissing on the old one.

Don't make female Thor make like... I don't know.. Farmgirl! Who fights crime by beating people with massive carrots.

She has the power to produce delicious vegatable crops and travels the world trying to fight hunger and promote enviromentalism.

Or like Muk-girl who can turn into a gelatious puddle of goo that absorbs people. And its like how the fuck do you stop her because she can just turn into a puddle of goo that is

1. Impossible to find
2. Impossible to kill
3. Fucking devours you

You know, something new, something different.

"Hey look it's Supergirl, She-Hulk and Female Thor!" is just embarrasing.

Yeah but comics have always been doing this. Marvel in particular.

Look, it's hard to come up with new ideas for established characters. It's also hard to come up with new characters and have them be successful.

Either way it's the same thing. They try lots of new ideas. Most of them are bad to mediocre, but every once in awhile they'll strike gold with a Miles Morales or a Kamala Khan.

Honestly I'd say the success rate in the end is about the same whether they're trying new characters or changing around old ones.

It may seem like they're just going for "woke points" or whatever. And yes, this may be true in some cases. But at the same time it's just them throwing lots of stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks.

And like I said, it's not like new versions of the characters who are female or a different race are this new thing Marvel is doing all of a sudden. She-Hulk goes back to 1980. Spider-Woman goes back to 1977. Oh yeah, and James Rhodes was Iron Man for a good chunk of the 80s. You're basically saying Marvel should change the way they've been doing things for decades.

With how the medium apparently evolved in the west (write the same story and characters over and over in different ways) I dunno how any new character can get big anymore. Either you don't bring attention to it and nobody cares because Batman/Spiderman is all that matters, or you put spotlights on it and people tell you to fuck off because you're shilling this unproved thing and they want more Batman/Spiderman.

They tried making original SJW characters, but no one bought the comics. So, now they just SJWize existing ones....and now those comic sales are in decline too.

for those who don't know, Lady Thor is Thor's girlfriend Jane Foster. the woman played by Natalie Portman in THor and Thor Dark World

Portman hates the role and refuses to come back so she's never gonna be Lady Thor. but in the comics, Thor lost his worthiness and couldn't wield the hammer anymore. and then Jane picked it up and turned into the new Thor.

What's the solution?

Honestly there probably is none. Comics are just harder to sell these days. The industry is on decline. The smartest thing for them to so would be to gradually let their company get smaller, and do basically the same thing as now but on a smaller scale. Fewer new series per year and more quality control--be pickier about what they put out.

Yes, but again subscription services have much lower profit margins and are really getting squeezed because everyone wants something like the Netflix model.

Trades and graphic novels are much better for the artist but not as good for the companies. They're more expensive to put out and the company tends to get a smaller share of the revenue.

Even though people are still interested in reading comics and graphic novels, it's harder to make money. Periodicals were always where comic companies made the most money directly, by far. That's what I'm talking about when I say it's in decline.

They tried that, but new characters don't sell.

Legacy characters is how they make new characters and still have the brand recognition to sell.

I'm not defending it, just giving an explanation.

this. DC and Marvel actually try all the fucking time to make new characters. almost every time, it doesn't work. people say they want new characters but they don't support it with money when it happens. I mean when a new progressive character is created, what usually happens is the typical types on like twitter and stuff nod their heads in approvement and say how cool it is, but don't actually buy it. or maybe they buy the first issue and that's it. Marvel and DC need to learn to listen to and follow the demands of the people actually giving them money. that's their problem. they keep trying to cater to people who aren't even fans. trying to get new fans but it rarely works and is not worth it. most comic fan nerds are pretty stubborn and just like the classic stuff they already know. even I am aware that am somewhat guilty of this too. but I also can sometimes like new stuff. I really love Kamala Khan, the new and current Ms Marvel. but most new characters aren't as good as Kamala is.

Yup. I just hope they don't forget they were hurting after the 90s comic boom died down, and they realize that there's no way the superhero craze will go on forever. Something different will come into style. Of course superheroes won't go away, but they're not going to top the charts forever. Hopefully Marvel is hedging their bets and making sure they will still be okay if popularity drops suddenly.

Even if the drop in popularity is gradual, not having too many eggs in that basket will be a good thing.

No, but on a related note, I don't really like the art for most of the recent and current comics. I miss when stuff looked like this:

I've read the first 10 issues of the following:
Female Thor, Spider Gwen, Gwenpool, and Totally Awesome Hulk.
FemThor: 3/10.
The writing is terrible and forced. The transition made no sense canonically, and she shouldn't have been called Thor. Thor is his name, not the fucking title. I've argued this so damn much.

SpiderGwen: 4/10
Juvenile and forced writing, vomit worthy art. All I have to say.

Gwenpool: 2/10
Tries to emulate deadpool, with none of the powers of deadpool. Also none of the originality, personality, or fun.

Totally Awesome Hulk: 7/10
The transition actually made sense. As much as I hated Banner dying, Cho was extremely close to Hull and it was a logical choice. The writing suffers occasionally when it tries to be "too hip" but overall not bad.
