Nah, I can appreciate the charm of DQ but the gameplay has barely evolved since the 90s. Nothing wrong with that, but it's just not for me. Designs are world building are lovely though.

I probably would except that it's $80. $40 or less and I'll get it.

Honestly, besides the first Dragon Quest, I'm really not a fan of the series. Final Fantasy is more my thing.

I liked 1 and half of 3, and 4, and Monsterss's'ss's/Joker... didn't like 5 (didn't exist), 6 (didn't come out), 7 (slow), 8 (slow)... and half of 9 (slow, but not too slow)

I've been playing it since I woke up and I'm thoroughly enjoying it so far. It's a bit saddening to go on n4g and see like 8/10 articles all about Spiderman and it's not even out yet. Whereas DQ is out with not nearly as much attention on it. It's not even in the top selling section on steam, which is really sad, because there are some bad or just plain obscure games on the top selling list. Early access and indie games are outselling the game on steam. Like wtf? Here on gamefaqs -- GTA V, Skyrim, and Monster Hunter have more active boards despite being out for ages. I know MH got the PC port recently but damn. I thought DQ was more popular than this. I thought it would get more attention, at least on it's release date for pete's sake. 60-100 hours of quality RPG content. Where the RPG fans at?? Saving for Spiderman? Makes me wonder just how much Spiderman is killing DQ's sales. I like Spiderman too, but a 20 hour story? With side missions and collectables it does add some time, but..geez. People are missing out.

I crunched the numbers and took the money I had set aside for the Spyro remasters (originally due to be released this month, delayed to November) to use for DQXI. Now, it is mine, and I am enjoying it immensely, though I am having to remind myself to take time to grind and keep my gear up to spec before going to the next area.

In response to Silver Clock: Dragon Quest (in the West) has a small and loyal (and casual-free) fan base, unlike the other titles you describe, and DQXI is substantially more expensive than any indie title on Steam. You are not going to see the level of online activity that those other games generate.

I like the game, but I can see a lot of people being disappointed because it's straight up just a pure dragon quest game and they might be expecting something new or strange if they don't know the series and see this on ps4 as a new game

I played like 10 minutes of 1 and/or 2 and/or 3 as a kid. didn't know what I was doing, and liked FF1 and 2 better at the time.

I played about a third or a half of 8 which I must have borrowed from my brother.

that's it till now.

enjoying this so far, I just hope it's challenging. I love the hard mode options, so at least there will be that.

Ugh, I so wish I had restarted in draconic mode before, I'm a bit over 20 hours in and I have skipped most fights (no reason to grind at all), just running around looking for items and fighting when mandatory.

There was no challenge at all before I got the healer. i think I used the heal spell from the main character less then 5 times total (forget about actually dying etc), and almost every time was out of combat just to top off.

I got 2 accessories early on, no clue where, one regens hp on the thief every turn, and the other regens MP (was on my main char...in theory to let him heal more often, cept he never actually had to heal).

Mostly just did the boss fights with a few fights along the way, and occasionally I would fight a new monster I had not seen before just to see what it was like.

Game is WAY too easy so far, perhaps it will get harder, but I doubt it will for awhile since I just got the healer recently. I went pure offense as well (great sword + knife) to kill asap. Forget about defenses, they are not needed.

I just can't see myself running through all that again, just to up the difficulty, they should let you do that at any time, just don't get a accomplishment or whatever those things people care about for some reason are.

Think if you upped damage and max hp by 40% or so, it would probably be at least slightly challenging, where healing was important and needed, and you had some chance of dying. Even the bosses so far have not usually done more then 1/3rd of a charactes max health in a hit. One boss had a group attack that could do almost 1/2, but he had to charge up for it, and it didn't happen often AND you had the healer by then (so yep, even with that i never manually healed in that fight, she healed everyone instead).

Normal mode (should have known better), should be VE mode, then easy mode should be about 20% more damage/hp, normal mode 40% more, Hard mode 80% more and Draconic 100% more (harder enemy option) and other options there as well for a real challenge.

I generally don't like boosting hp though to increase difficulty, but honestly it's pretty much needed. If you go pure offense, since defense so far hasn't seemed important at all, everything dies so fast (most non-bosses in 1 hit, often whole groups that way etc).

Oh well, still fun, just no challenge at all so far.

Those are DLC items. I'm not using that stuff, don't want the game to be too easy.

Ahh yeah, those are the items, thought they were pretty rediculously powerful. i mean, it's only a few hp a pop (the mp regen hasn't mattered) but still that really adds up.

Sure that is partially why it's been so easy, won't matter much at all now that there is a dedicated healer though.

loving the game, but yeah it is a bit too easy. but at the same time, what I just did tricky devil was basically the first "boss" and while not hard, it definitely could have killed me if I made the wrong choices. I wouldn't expect the early game to be crushingly difficult anyway and I definitely won't mind playing through again with some of the hard modes enabled.

i've been running past some areas anyway

well, yesterday I started over with harder enemies and less xp turned on, and got back to where I was in half the time. definitely better this way. highly recommended for anyone starting the game to at least turn on harder enemies (though it's still possible there's one or more difficulty spikes later in the game).

You can also just not do any random fights at all, boosts the diff a bit that way, and you don't feel like your having to redo stuff if your 20+ hours in. Makes the first run through very fast, but it's a bit more challenging because you don't level at all, get mats/rare items etc, gold from fights etc. Might even get too hard eventually that way, but so far.....nope. I had 1 char get knocked out by the beat of the desert, but that is it so far as far as boss fight deaths (veronica or the mage chick has very low hp/defenses initially, and he 1 shot her with his focus on 1 person attack.)

I just can't stomach playing through a game again, even if I could probably get back to where i am in 10-12 hours, I don't have that in me, i'd just stop playing it for now and play spiderman and it would join my backlog of games that I'll never actually get to playing (along with FFXV, Fallout 4 etc).
