I just don't understand fashion as a concept. It's like... "I use clothing/appearance to outwardly depict my identity" or something? Is that the logic? My younger brother does that and I don't understand it. He looks like some edgy Hot Topic teenager and he's 28.

How much function do you require to walk to class

How much function do you require for [insert everyday activity]?

I've softened my stance on cargo shorts a little. I can see that if you're taking your kids to the park then maybe those extra pockets genuinely are useful to quickly store toys without losing sight of your toddlers while juggling 4 different things at once.

But I don't think that's why most people wear cargo shorts. It doesn't explain why Stevey McGamefaqs throws on a pair just to go to the gas station to pick up some ice cream for midnight munchies. It doesn't explain why Stevey McGamefaqs is incredibly defensive about them either, going as far as to wear them when out at a bar or going for dinner at a restaurant.

I think a lot of guys wear cargo shorts because they've made it part of their personality to wear cargo shorts. They don't like trendy things that seem to suggest being restrictive and sparse and making superficial life choices and feel either repulsed or threatened by people that do, and so they've taken onboard this sort of "utilitarian warrior" persona. They don't need 14 pockets to walk around doing everyday things, but they want to make damn sure that everyone knows that they care more about having that option than about trivial fashion nonsense.

Ironically cargo shorts wearers are making a fashion statement, but they think they are not.

I think a lot of guys who aggressively 'reject' the concept of fashion are doing it in part as a sort of performative extension of their personality. It's not like they can't or won't see things that would improve their aesthetics (although I think figures come into it for some) , they just want to be seen as some sort of counter cultural, enlightened beings and almost go out of their way to not be seen as 'buying in' to it.

Although I'm sure the people I used to see espousing this idea used to sort of 'nerd peacock' if that makes sense. Sure, I hate fashion but I'll wear some branded tee only certain people will get or wear some really garish accessories!

I need my cargo pants to carry my Switch and 3DS. Also my EDC multi-tool, my phone, my keys, my wallet, my EDC flashlight, my EDC pocket knife (when I need to fast deploy, the multi-tool takes too long), my emergency glass breaker (in case my car plunges into a lake and I have to break the window), my portable batteries and my notebook (paper notebook, to write things I think about that I don't want to forget). I keep one pen in my shirt pocket (uni-ball 207 with micro tip) and a couple of back ups in my pockets.

I know one guy who is the textbook "I don't care about fashion" dude. Cargo shorts, fedora, goatee, fedora, trenchcoat, ponytail. He's a walking stereotype.

The joke to me is that this guy knows his ponytail is actively hurting his chances at getting the kinds of jobs he wants, but he won't just chop it off. Guy is way more vain about his hair than I am with my trendy haircut, apparently.

Maybe you're just underthinking it

Warriors would go into battle wearing facepaint to scare the enemy. Imagine that. You're literally about to go and get a sword through your chest but you're taking the time to do your makeup. Animals spread out their feathers to attract mates. Clearly it's not just a silly thing humans do. Everyone consciously or unconsciously puts out signals about themselves by the way they appear to other people. Fashion is probably the most ubiquitous "hobby" in the world, because everyone takes part in it whether they want to or not.

No, I'm thinking about it the exact correct amount based on the value I place on it.

This shit is like me calling anyone who gets into current fashion a follower, or some other ridiculous thing.

I'm not telling you how you need to feel about it - if you honestly don't care about it that's your business

But if you want to not care about it and then be annoyed that other people care about it and don't have your point of view I don't know what else to say. Whether you want to or not the way you present yourself says something about you, which is going to be understood differently for different people.

I dont have cargo shorts anymore, I just wear athletic shorts mostly now. But when I did have cargo shorts, it just felt better having all the stuff in the bottom pockets by your knees than being pressed up against your hips. Even if I wasnt carrying much stuff I'd still use those pockets first.

Probably looking stylish. Theres a difference between "fashion" and looking professional. Like you wouldnt wear skinny jeans or cargo shorts to an interview or a business/business casual workplace.
