Remember those guys in black eyeliner and side-swept bangs?
Converse shoes with every outfit? Green Day's American Idiot Album? Arguing whether some artists were truly emo, punk, scene, or just alternative? Remember Jared Leto's band 30 Seconds to Mars? Remember when liking underground things was Emo instead of Hipster? Remember discovering emo bands via myspace? Remember the subculture that hated mainstream?

I truly miss the emo aesthetic.

please post nostalgic emo things. Let you inner emo kid back out.

I have a lot of general nostalgia for that era and emo is very much a big part of that.

American Idiot still remains as one of my absolute favorite albums.

Also, Tony Hawk games were at their peak back then.

But Green Day is not emo

Maybe not by music genre standards but Emo was more than a music genre. It was an aesthetic too. And I'm talking about the entire scene. Greenday (and their album American Idiot) was undoubtedly a part of this scene. Boulevard of Broken dreams was a flagship mainstream poster-song. And again, this discussion was common amongst emo-kids; the argument around whether some bands were truly emo, whether they were actually punk, ska, goth rock, or alternative rock, was all a part of the emo sub-culture.

My hs years were 2001-2005. Suburban wisconsin so we had lots of jocks and wanna be country boys, splattered with a few actual country boys and a few emos. Being a nerd I guess my orbit was around the emos but not part of it. Thought they were kinda silly.

But I'll take it any day over this k-pop bullshit kids are into now

If you're talking about the aesthetic, yeah the aesthetic was pervasive and I actually enjoyed the style, bonus points because it was very attractive on women. Actually this look of people being covered in eyeliner and having crazy hair kind of goes back to the glam/goth and arena rock of earlier decades. I think it was a confusing period because the look adopted the same name of the genre which it had little in common with. Eventually towards the end people started splashing color into everything and called it scene. Weird times all around.

I still think AFI had a major influence in making the actual aesthetic popular, if you look back into how AFI did things early on and where they came from they were more of a meld between early hardcore and punk using heavy themes of horror in their songs and they would theme themselves that way with thick eyeliner and this goth/bdsm look. This wasn't too uncommon in the 90s, a lot of punk bands did the horror thing and brought it out in their dress and themes at concerts. If anything I think the look was more of a morph from this scene rather than emo.

Just cause he wore eyeliner? I guess Boulevard of Broken Dreams was pretty emo, but i always considered them pop punk, even aesthetic was not entirely there.

Emo always seemed like the middle of a Venn diagram and not necessarily its own rigidly defined entity. It was a little bit of pop punk, techno, metal, eyeliner, dark humor, tight clothes, etc.
