$18 would be $1.80 for 10% and $3.60 for 20%, so I could easily see tipping $4 to avoid having to worry about change.

Service would have to be acceptable, though. Poor service gets a handful of pennies as a blatant fuck you.

I just basically tip this way:

Below 15$ I tip 2$, 15-17$ I just pay with a 20 and don't get change. $18 and up, I usually pay with my card and tip about 20% rounded up to the nearest dollar (I just like even numbers).

So a 6$ pizza at NY vinnies (god I love their pizza), I tip $2.

A Double burger at Red Robin is about 16$ and I just pay with a 20.

Going to the Sunday Brunch and Bud Bay Cafe is $27 base, so I tip $6.

Works well for me, and seems to make the servers/cooks happy as I get extra food (especially extra cheese on my pizza....hehehe) etc. I've had places change entire lunch specials for me, or give me a whole big bowl of Hot and Sour Soup instead of the salad/veggies/rice that go with the lunch special etc (this one place in Gilroy I used to go all the time, great food, expensive though, but the lunch specials where $10. The sauteed potatoes and beef lunch came with rice, and salad, which I didn't like, so instead the initially gave me 2 extra small bowls of hot and sours (most delecious hot and sour soup I have ever had). Eventually I got that enough times long enough, they would just give me one large bowl, which cost as much as the lunch special itself lol.

So tipping really does pay off, honestly quite often I get more value out of it (in extra food, or really well made food etc) then it would have cost to get it by paying.
