Do people just use it for background noise? I can kinda understand watching Let's Plays cuz you want to see what a game is like, but they're in short bursts and are put out slowly so you can watch them. idk how you can watch someone plow through a singleplayer game so quickly on a stream, where you'll probably miss something. Or how people can watch the streamer play the same multiplayer game over and over again. And what exactly are the reasons that people tip? Is it because the streamer gives good commentary?

Maybe I'm just too old and 'don't get it' anymore. Maybe this is more for people younger than me.

I don't have good enough Internet connection to watch livestreams so I don't watch them, but yeah I guess it's entertaining to see already funny people playing the games you like while interacting with the viewers. Also good background noise too.

I mean, most old people still don't understand how we're able to sit and just smash buttons in a controller while staring at a screen for hours, so I guess it's the same thing that's happening with this new streaming thing.

Most of the time the game is secondary. If a streamer is very personable it just kinda feels like hangin' out.

I usually watch VODs, but I happened to catch one streamer live the other day. It was kind of cool chatting with her/chat about what she was playing. I probably wouldn't do it every single day though.

As for watching those long-ass streams, it usually is just background noise for me. If it's something I'm paying attention to, I can just leave it and come back to it later if I need to.

Maybe it's a game I don't have any interest in playing myself, but I'm interested enough in general to see what it's all about.

The main thing I've spent a lot of time watching on twitch is competitive Smash, but I lost interest in that. For streamers I like, I usually just watch when they upload their streams to YouTube.

I'd watch streamers to see if I'd enjoy the game they were playing. Only a very few streamers are entertaining though.

One streamer who use to do NBA 2k was funny though I'd end up watching his stream for over a hour I think his name was imanoying

This. I enjoy the fact that you can interact personally with the person hosting stream. That was unheard of in the days of television

There are several things of note.

One is the concept of a chat room. Remember chat rooms? They were big back in the late 90's. Lots of people were into those. Twitch streams are essentially chat rooms with a host. There's also a videogame aspect. Watching someone play, talking about the game and games in general. A lot of people played games with friends or siblings growing up. It's not uncommon at all. The chat room aspect plays into that. Also, the streamers that tend to have a loyal following are at the very least somewhat charismatic.

So if someone can't understand the appeal of watching a twitch stream, perhaps they could understand the appeal of a chat room and/or the appeal of playing games with someone else. It's really not that illogical of a jump as far as entertainment goes.

Huge streamers are a different story, as those chats are a mess but I assume the hosts are particularly charismatic. Probably a big part of it is all their friends also watch. I would theorize that the mega streamers have a younger audience on average.

This actually would make a lot of sense. I remember asking my brother why he watches streamers like five or six years ago and he told me he was used to watching me play the games growing up.

that's pretty interesting. I don't watch any streamers regularly and rarely check them out even when interested in a game, but my younger brother is always watching them
given that he also grew up watching me play a lot of games, it's a cool theory

I imagine a lot of the smaller ones do, like with a couple hundred viewers. The huge channels with tens of thousands of viewers not at all.

And you also need equipment and decent weather and a lot of room. It requires some effort to set up.

On the contrary, Fortnite is free to play and it's available on every platform. Almost anyone watching someone stream Fortnite could be playing it themselves with but a minimum of effort.

Hey, youre right!! Let me download fortnight on my phone and instantly do what Ninja does like getting #1 in matches.

Oh wait, I cant do that. But what IF I wanted to see what it looks like?? Typically when I join a game I land and just die to the first person I see. Maybe I would like to watch someone good? While im watching, I may even chat with other players and make new friends!!

Nah, fuck that, ill sit at home alone playing the game alone and have no fun. Its not like humans are social creatures.

Sure, but it's the difference between playing in a little league game, and watching the NFL finals, ninja isn't just one of the most popular streamers, he's also one of the best players at the game. Besides, no one watches football because they don't have 21 other players, they don't think to themselves "I'd love to play football now but i'll settle for watching", no, they watch football because they want to watch football.
