PSA to states/cities/construction companies: Just because the work stops on weekends, doesn't mean the related inconveniences for literally everyone else stop as well.

Fucking garbage bullshit. Make a new god damn contract to bring in a second shift to get shit done on the fucking weekends instead of letting this shit linger for months on end. God forbid road construction is ever handled properly and conveniently and in a timely, efficient manner.

No but it'll get the projects done more quickly at a rate of two extra days' work per week. That's pretty significant.

I made a different topic bitching about road construction. Wouldn't say it's a gimmick, it's just extremely prevalent right now because summer in Minnesota is road construction hell

When I first moved here, people were like "ohh yaa we only get two seasons, wInTeR aNd CoNsTrUcTiOn SeAsOn." At first I thought it was silly but now it's like why the fuck are people saying that like it's a point of pride? Driving is a pretty important part of everyday life, you really think people want to be reminded that they live in a place where it's either slushy/snowy/icy on the roads or torn up to shreds?

Sure but if they worked on weekends too then your zone wouldn't have been under construction anymore because it'd be done by now.

So answer us then, why can't they bring in a second shift or something to get stuff done on weekends or outside 8-5? And I've already stated that I'd be fine with a few extra cents out of my paycheck if it meant getting the job done weeks earlier.

Or why they all think it's cool to spend so much time standing around and literally vaping every morning (which is what the crew outside my apartment has been doing when I leave for work every morning)

LOL jesus christ, what a way to start the Monday; I roll out of my garage and one of the two roads out of the garage driveway (the one I normally take, which leads to the dirt road picture in the OP) is fucking barricaded with road closed signs, so I had to take the OTHER exit, which not only is in the exact opposite direction and features a HUGE, almost CURB-sized bump which requires coming to a complete stop, but also requires going to a light that takes fucking forever to change, and only is green long enough for about 3-4 cars.

What a fucking travesty

Being that I work in construction, what is your preferred method for getting the job done? Would you prefer night work from 10PM to 4AM in a Residential area? Would you prefer weekend work starting at 6AM and costing what I'm assuming is a city project nearly double the cost because you want the crews to work on weekends? Even if a crew is NOT at 40 hours for the week all weekend work is double time and that's why you rarely see construction companies with crews going on weekends. The crew will do it, provided the owner is going to pay for it.

I see some RCP in that picture, looks like they'll be installing that soon enough, or would you prefer they don't install that, which is probably the entire reason for the work in the first place? Would you prefer if they just let the storm drain fail and flood out the entire area every time it rains? Or even if the job was to replace the asphalt and they decided that they better update their storm lines now while the road is milled down, would you prefer they let the road turn to complete shit and not ever fix and/or repair it?

I'll tell you what, go to the foreman tomorrow and give him your schedule and when it would be most convenient for you that they work. Let's see how well that goes. Better yet, write your councilman and tell him to increase the budget on the project so they can work nights and weekends.

Or....

Suck it up and leave 10 minutes early.

To answer your muddled shit in order:

Jobs are bid based on price. Most highways jobs are still bid out to private and public sector companies. The reason public sector unions still get the job is because they are cheaper. They are cheaper because they don't run dumbfuck amounts of OT. The other side is engineers don't work 24 hours a day, surveyors don't, and testers don't.

For a highway, you're looking at a ton of surveying and compaction tests. Those tests occur usually first thing in the morning, and if during the day, the site will have to completely shut down while those tests happen. If those tests fail, you are ripping up what you did the day before, potentially to pull a chunk of clay that was mixed in with the base by accident. That's all it takes.

Regarding standing around, every morning on bigger jobs, you are waiting, after your mandatory dumbfuck safety meeting, for the super to finish his piles of useless paperwork so that all bases are covered for work to proceed, and then he comes out and gets a crew of upwards of a dozen guys to start on continuing work.

You have no idea the logistical nightmare that this shit can be, all while fuckheads are speeding by swearing at you because you aren't working hard enough, and they need to get to their desk jockey job where they work for 10 minutes out of every hour.

Best part: the safety shit that slows everyone down so badly is 100% pushed by desk jockey shitheads who can't be bothered to do any real work.

Bring in a second shift so the overtime/double cost isn't a factor.

And again I've already said the extra cents from my paycheck are not a problem.

I'm not dense, I recognize the stuff has to get done. I have no problem with the fact that they have to do it. I have a problem with how long it takes to do it and how they can do it more efficiently.

Secondly, I'm actually pretty impressed with how some paving gets done seemingly overnight. I wake up and suddenly Highway 7 is smooth as silk. Like damn fam that's quite impressive.

Lol, as if ten minutes is enough to make up for the delays caused on the MSP highway system right now. Keep living in la-la fairy land and go back to standing around "on break" like the whole crew seems to be doing every time I drive by.

It's funny how you can't see it from our perspective, and yet, the construction undoubtedly affects you too because you have to drive there, thus having to leave earlier since your trip is delayed by construction as well. Isn't it in your best interest to finish up quickly as well?
