There's nothing surprising at all about the reaction to anyone who pays attention to gentrification.

There are literally groups dedicated to wrecking areas that are gentrifying, in order to prevent that gentrification. Yelling at interlopers is tame in comparison.

I don't agree with that behavior, though. I don't even know if I agree with the admittedly milder reaction from gamepimp ITT. I don't see a problem with white people going where they wouldn't go before. I really see it more as a problem of the inability of black people to go about unharassed in wide swaths of society.

The ultimate issue isn't the graffiti tour, which I agree has racist undertones at the very least if not actually racist intent, but gentrification. And gentrification is complicated but not usually unequivocally bad.

I think these attitudes regarding the ownership of public areas, like this lady is demonstrating are bad, though-- I just don't think it's fair that white communities have the tools to make the exclusion run one way, and that's what I want to attack, not gentrification per se. This lady is upset, but only because she sees things as a kind of conflict between groups, which is sadly all too accurate most of the time. But harassing these white people won't help anything.

So yeah

I apologize for this long and rambling post.

I see what your point is with the whole 'tour to see black people', I think the concept is pretty blatantly racist but at the same time the vid looked vile

I dont want to call the tour goers innocent, because they have their own races and sterotypical behaviors/thoughts that made them think this tour was a good idea in the first place, but they arent the worst offenders here Its generally the tour givers and the company behind them that are the ones that should really be cussed out.

Because of past cases of zoning laws and white flight American cities are pretty segregated. Both by wealth and race.

American gentrification generally comes with a forced take over of said district, so the community that was already there is broken up and never actually get to see the improvements of the area.

That's like that EVERYWHERE.

I see a bunch of Chinese tour guides giving Chinese people tours in places they wouldn't normally go in tons of places. I've seen non-locals in Europe giving tours to people who wouldn't normally go there. That's what the tourism industry is like. Who cares if they're part of the community or not? If people in the community had a sense of entrepreneurship instead of negativity, they would be the ones doing the tours.

Here is the reality: Nobody go on tours to see people, nobody. I take that back, if the women are hot, I'll look at them. I've traveled multiple countries and I can't recall caring about the people (other than the beautiful women). I just wanted to see things and places. That's how tourism is.

You have to be incredibly insecure to think that people go there to see black people. No, they go there to see street art. It's no different than me going to Rome to see the Roman Forum. The fact that people take interest in different cultures and art is positive to society, not negative.

When people take interest, it's racism. When people take no interest (A Wrinkle in Time), it's racism. What isn't racism these days? Life is too short to complain about nonsense like this.

But for your first point, its generally some massive event that changes neighborhoods.

Like for example Compton was black middle class heaven before the crack epidemic Changed the culture and community.

That being said most of the other changes are generally natural choice of residents, gentrification is generally more forceful, its large sums of money used to force people from their homes.

I would be fine with that, but I hope you realize that this would cause the same people who are getting angry over white gentrification to be upset. Ultimately I think it comes down to the fact that the community is changed by bringing in a lot of new people from different backgrounds, for better or worse. It doesn't have to be white people either. You could bring in a lot of Asian immigrants, for example, and it would change the community. The same goes for bringing in African-Americans of different regional and class backgrounds. The community becomes changed, and the people trying to preserve it won't be happy about that.
