Did you know the items you get in Bubble Bobble are determined by your actions?
Falling through the bottom of a stage gets you bonus potions, popping water bubbles gets you umbrellas and so on. Another game like this is Tower of Druaga... but it's done in a rather abusive way, most levels have a chest with very esoteric conditions to unlock it... and many are mandatory to get the good ending --- "Salt cures Everything!"
