Part of it is to get good relationships with universities and get good hires. But yeah, when you get on board,be prepared to do the bitch work no one wanted to do.

Nothing that straightforward. I actually think most interns probably cost more than they're worth (even unpaid labor has costs associated with recruitment and training)

No interns are basically useless.

Besides the internship typically provides students a path to a decent career if they want. That way they don't cry about not being able to find work after they graduate.

Maybe for smaller employers, definitely not bigger ones. When I worked in a large accounting firm, the interning program was known to be a huge financial loser. They got paid something like $25 an hour and were taken out for food nearly daily while doing little work. It was just tolerated because management knew it was a good way of wooing and securing good talent out of school.

These two. Company can get something out of these programs long term, but the short term probably costs them.

I have unpaid RAs, and i certainly spend a whole lot more time training them than it would take me to do anything I ask them to do. I mostly take on RAs as a service to the department/undergrads.

It's only bad when you suck at networking, if you're the type who keeps to themselves and won't speak unless spoken to and stays quiet as possible, they're just gonna use you up and spit you out , if you're the type to socialize, get to know your peers and maybe form something of a kinship with them, you can quickly move through the ranks and get a high paying job as young as 19.

Just another way for society to kill off the anti-social and shy types.

Lots of internships actually pay good money. Only certain industries are exploitive paying little to no wage.
