It's not like you're going to get rich from it. But it is a nice way to make a little extra money. Whether you want some to help with bills or you want a little play money or whatever. Have any of you thought about selling plasma?

I've never done it before.
How much did you make?

Well, I've donated 4 times in the past 2 weeks and made $270. Though, that's probably the highest I'll make unless they have a special or something a month. I should make another $140 buy the end of this month bringing the total to $410. After that, I think I'll be getting about $220 a month. That's also because I'm light. A friend who's in the next weight bracket makes about $260 a month. But him and his wife both do it. So, like $520. Like I said, not a whole lot. But good money for basically just sitting there. I just watch Hulu until it's done. They have free Wi-Fi.

I did it for a while when I was working my way through college.

I was always annoyed that as a 6'2 200+ dude I was donating a whole bottles worth of plasma while I'd watch the 120lb girls only having to donate half. I'm like, I should be getting paid more for my milk.

Yeah. It takes a little longer, though. They take you blood just like when donating, but then they separate the plasma from the red blood cells, then put the cells back. It's takes a few cycles, though. I think normally 4 cycles.

It's not much. But still decent for literally just sitting for a little while.

You should be. They pay by weight at the center I go to. They would be making less. Or they should have been...

Some of them are. And some of them just need money. And some just want more money. And lots of military do it around here...

To make a little extra. It's like donating blood. Except you get useless cells back and money... I like donating blood, too. But I might do this for a while instead to make some money to pay some stuff off...

People make a living doing this.

Technically your not supposed to do it that often. I believe there is a restriction to once a month in most other countries.

Here it varies from center to center but for instance in olympia, there is 3 centers.

They all have similar rates. It goes something like this:

First time you donate a week you get $40, second time you get $60 a few let you do a third, but you only get $40.

So some people donate to all 3, basically donating every day. This lets them get 40$/60$/40$/$60/$40/$60/$40 or a net $340 a week (about $1400 a month).

That isn't all they make though because.....each of them offers a bonus $100 if you get a new person to sign up, and donate twice.

So...some people basically put adds on craigslist etc, offering an extra $50 to anyone who signs up and donates plasma twice. There is no limit on the number of times you can get that bonus.....but it's pretty easy to at least get 1 new person a week if you try. That nets you about $1600 a month without much effort and spending about an hour a day.

Not sure if it's taxed as I have not done it myself, not even sure if they pay cash or what, but I think many of the people doing it wouldn't have a way to cash a check, maybe they give them a card with money on it or something. Anyway, if it's tax free, that is actually quite a bit more then minimum wage lol.....and you "work" like 7 hours a week.

You can't donate to multiple plasma centers unless wherever you live has no laws/rules against it.

They paint one of your fingernails with some kind of UV shit that shows up under a black light and check it before every donation. If it showed up and wasn't from their location, they would refuse to let you donate.

That was the case with the three places I had gone to years ago. It's probably even easier for them to track now.

For the place I go to, it's no more than twice in any 7 day period. And you have to wait at least a day in between. As for the money we receive, it's by weight. Because that will choose how much plasma they can get from you.

At the center I go to, they use a card that they add money to.

You would have to go to a plasma center. You would have to look it up for your area. And the prices can also differ depending on where you are located. Like, at my center, for the first four(considering you're labeled as a new donor), it's $60, $75, $60, $75. After that, it goes down in price. I believe it's either $10, $15, or $20 based on weight for the first donation of the week. And $10 more for the second. And the 6th, 7th, & 8th donations a month get a bonus of $10, $20, & $30 respectively. But as wolfy42 said, the places he went to had different prices. I think our place was like that before it changed, though.

It might just be some kind of digital database now that would flag you. I had asked about it once when I was donating and one of the...whatever people said they were trying to set it up as a electronic medical record thing.

But it's still possible that people don't give a shit.

That could be true, too. I think the place I donate just kinda takes your word for it, though. It's one of the questions on the test thing...

I hate needles so I'd never do this. And donating blood(I know plasma isn't blood but close enough) is really just giving a free product for the blood banks to sell for big profit. Just like Goodwill, people give their stuff for another company to sell and make a profit off of. Why would I want to do this? Makes no sense.

Well, the title of my topic is "Selling Plasma is a good way to make a little extra cash...", so there's that. But eventually, people still usually end up calling it donating. That being said, I think you can donate plasma if you want. But I wanted to talk specifically about selling it ad making a little extra pocket change or side money or fun money or whatever people want to call it. I know some who have used it for only one thing, like gas or lunch...

Greedy because we're selling plasma. I guess you can think that if you want. But I don't. I've donating blood plenty of times. But now I can sell plasma. In the end, it can still help people. So, I really don't see the problem...
