I can't remember the last time I went to church, it was probably Easter or Christmas, possibly a wedding. For 90% of church goers it is a waste of time. They don't take part in the community, they just go to church or maybe a random pot luck, they don't reflect spiritually, they listen to a lecture and take a drink, they don't read their holy book and discuss how to practice it in their daily lives. It is just something they do because they feel they should.

You can follow a religion without church, but many go to church without following the religion.

Imagine being this woke.

On a less cynical note, that's based on what you believe god/a higher power to be. If you think it to be this all-caring, all-powerful entity, then you are likely to feel like there's no way it could exist. You feel betrayed that there's no miracle coming your way or no sign that you're looked out after.

Alternatively, if there is a higher power in charge of Earth and humans and we have yet to prove or disprove its existence, and it's
all-caring, then we could make an assumption that we're unable to understand its motives, if it has any. What it knows is help doesn't look like it to us until we're better able to understand.

Lastly, there could be a god, but it just doesn't care at all.

It wouldn't actually work if you really think about it. A person who follows a religion solely to get into heaven is not a true believer. God is all powerful. Do you really think he would not be able to tell that you're just faking it to get into heaven? He would definitely know, and boom you're going to hell.

Also, there's a slim chance that you would actually pick the "right" religion anyway. There are tons of religions out there. Then there are sub-sets of religions as well. For example, what if Catholicism is the "right" religion, and you're Christian but not actually Catholic? Well, you're still screwed and going to hell.

I think it could work. I think if you go around and do good, it should be fine. Like, as long as you're not going around being a dick to everyone. As long as you're not trying to be bad and going to church, God would know you're trying. And if he's like they say he is, then it should be good enough for most people to get in. As for the religions, it would depend on their
God(s).

Almost every Christian religion says that just being good isn't good enough. You need to be "saved from your sins" and be "born again" to get into heaven. Just being good isn't enough to "save you from your sins." You would still be a sinner.

The one piece of logic that has always turned me off from "those" types of religions that deal with the whole "salvation vs damnation" ideologies is that they never discuss what happened to the millions of people born before their book was written. Like what, you were born before Christ was hung on the cross? Too bad, kid! Go to hell!

Or civilizations that could never have possibly heard of Jesus Christ, such as Native Americans. Were all Native Americans automatically doomed to go to hell?
