This thinking is wrong on so many levels

- It's hypocritical. Liberals tend to think ISPs should be obligated to follow Net Neutrality is based on the principle of freedom of speech. Also the only reason they are OK with say Alex Jones discussion being banned is that they disagree with/don't like Alex Jones.

- Banning discussion of certain topics is not the same thing as moderating posts that you already said weren't allowed in your ToS

- Websites like Facebook, Twitter , Youtube, and Instagram have become social media monopolies. Because of this they should have fewer rights as "private businesses", and I think in any other situation liberals would agree with this (Citizens United for example)

How do you figure?

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

I don't see anything limiting what private enterprise can do.

No. We dont agree with Glenn Beck or Fox news most of the time.

Alex Jones is simply a dangerous individual to our society. Pinning people against each other with BS claims (democrat attack on july 4, Pizzagate, crisis actors..etc) just so he can make himself rich selling bs vitamins.

Thats all there really is to it.

i've mostly been arguing from the angle that these businesses enjoy near-monopolies over their sectors through artificial means which amplifies the case that it's an indirect form of state-enabled censorship but i think there's a little more to it than that

i recall the point being raised once that these sites/companies have contracts that define the terms of service, and the arbitrary nature by which certain people have been banned is a breach of contract and therefore has legal implications

if the market was cornered by like a half-dozen bakeries because they enjoy a spider web of baking regulations and tax breaks that keep competition out of the arena, yes, there would be a problem there

with that said, there's a difference between denying service and not offering a particular kind of product

I think what he means is that "freedom of speech" and "first amendment" are two separate entities, and since only the latter is part of the constution, the formal is not protected by the constitution, thus implying that "freedom of speech" is just an abstract concept with no constitutionally legal precedent or protection, and therefore claims of freedom of speech "violations" are actually just nothing, because freedom of speech isn't a valid claim legally and therefore cannot even be violated because according to the constitution, it's not a thing, so anyone saying "I have freedom of speech so I can say what I want and you can't punish me!" is just spouting fake news like Homer Simpson closing his eyes and running a red light because "if I don't see it, it's not illegal!" This would mean tc has cleverly disguised this parody topic as legit. I for one am impressed.

You completely ignored the first post of this topic.

Anyway, to a certain degree I see that a business is an extension of a person. But even a local chain of grocery stores has much less of a right to decide who they sell to than a sole proprietorship bakery. For one thing, a local bakery could easily be boycotted against and have to treat all customers fairly if they want to stay in business. Twitter, Facebook, Google? Not so much.
