David Hayter tweeted for Snake/Draven, not Link/Draven, for obvious reasons

it was the best part of the contest and made me realize why I still love the things even when crap like this happens

(also the most impressive performance of the contest was Shepard staying in double digits)

but yeah SSBM rallying to beat CT was way worse because CT was showing it had the potential to actually win the contest (or at least beat OoT) and SSBM had zero chance to win the contest even after beating CT with a rally

I wasn't around during 2013 so I can't say for sure. I imagine I would have been in favor as I've always found Link's dominance boring, and It definitely sounds like it made the contest way more interesting than it would have been otherwise. Hard to say without being in the moment though.

I don't know how controversial of an opinion this is, but I'd love to see Draven come back this year. If there's no rally chances are he gets eliminated in the first round. If there is a rally then there's no way the rally is as big as it was in 2013, so it would be interesting to see where he fell.

How was CT supposed to get past Undertale if it couldn't deal with Melee's rally? I could see getting mad if CT really would have ended up facing OOT, but that just wasn't going to happen.

I still think about this match and it gives me absolute chills. Chills. I remember waking up and seeing how close this match was and my jaw fucking dropped. Like in real life, not metaphorically. Vivi going-toe-to-toe with the assumed 4th strongest of the Noble Nine, probably 3rd by this point.

Yes, Ganondorf was LFFing Mario. That shouldn't matter. It's fucking Mario.

I don't know anybody who called this unless they were half-joking. Nobody is going to say "I think Mario is going to lose to Vivi" unless they wanna get laughed off the board.

I am so fucking proud of Vivi to this day. This is one of those matches that makes everything worth it. We put up with so much shit during this contest. Getting buttdevestated was like nothing when you were reminded that Vivi. Beat. Mario.

There was a rally for Vivi, too. Just look at those vote totals. It had 10,000 more than the matches before it and after it, and around the same amount as L-Block's rallied win.

Like since SM64 there hasn't been a main series Mario that people really love. Nintendo keeps releasing games that are either half-assed (most of the New Mario series) or are underwhelming for some reason (the 3D ones). They don't have a soul I guess.

Maybe Odissey fixed that, but I'm not sure.

The Galaxy games were received well enough that they could have been classics, but they suffered a lot from gamers just hating everything related to the Wii. Add in Sunshine just not being very good and there was a really long time without a truly beloved Mario game.

No, Sunshine is divisive, not really disliked. But obviously I've been spending too much time in Chuggaaconroy land where Sunshine is better than 64.

Personally I wouldn't go QUITE that far but I overall really enjoyed Sunshine when I last played it and thought it was just as good as any other Mario game. And I jumped RIGHT into it after finishing 64 (though this was back in 2014), and then somehow 100%'d the game in only two months after taking pretty much the whole year to 100% 64. Obviously something must have worked.

Wind Waker went from being disliked by many to being considered the best in the series by many (me included), albeit still polarizing, but mostly in terms of people who hate the game REALLY hate it (like Ulti).

Then again I grew up on the GameCube so yeah.

Sunshine has looked bad in just about every poll it's ever been in, so it definitely leans more toward just plain disliked. Heck, even in the year it came out, it got utterly obliterated by Metroid Prime in GotY polls.

Other fandoms have that kind of passion too, just not in the same level.

I think people get more hype over footage of Fire Emblem and Xenoblade than from Mario.

I'm trying to find out if the perspective of the nintendo fanbase is skewed.

I think my point is that apathy is worse than hate. The Mario fandom is less emotional than the others, maybe even the Final Fantasy fandom. They may love or hate a FF game, Mario fans just don't care as much.

I don't think the Mario fanbase is apathetic either. Mario 3, Mario World, and Mario 64 are all probably top 10-15 games here. Heck, Super Mario RPG won its division in 2015 and beat some pretty popular games in the process despite having virtually zero European presence.

But like FF and Zelda, the new games aren't as popular as the classics (well, we'll see about Odyssey and BotW, I guess).

I absolutely lost my shit for like a week after odyssey trailers dropped, I even fucking counted views compared to BotW (mario consistently slew zelda's numbers in terms of hype btw, wasn't even close)

The difference is that mario fans don't have games they hate because Mario games are not allowed to be bad

meanwhile zelda has had multiple pretty mediocre games - Phantom Hourglass, Skyward Sword, could count Twilight Princess in there too

Like it's weird but while Mario has had mediocre games (Paper Jam? Or was it Sticker Star? One of those), nobody really cares about those. The key is that mainline Mario is always godlike and we're happy they continue to set a standard for how to make good games.

To me, the contest really didnt go off the rails until Vivi beat Mario. I knew Draven was a threat, but Vivi winning meant virtually anything was on the table. All of the sudden, upsets like Squirtle > Cloud and Kirby > Sephiroth seemed way more possible. Could it be possible none of the Noble Nine 1 seeds make it past round three? I figured there was a good chance the Noble Nine label and 1 seeds could amount a giant target for outside forces to take them down, be it for fandom for the other characters or even to mine Board 8 salt. It was pretty much like the opening of Pandoras Box in a way.

I played Dream Team a few years ago and it's everything I expect from a Mario RPG.

Quite honestly, I was surprised to see Link put up a fight with Draven. I admit I was half rooting for Draven because I didn't want to see an obvious LInk victory again. I didn't mind Draven in retrospect until Undertale barrelled its way to the championship. Once is fine. Twice is...no.

Now, CT vs. SSBM... that match took months for me to recover from. Our GameFAQs darling didn't deserve something like that.

Vivi/Mario meant a lot to me and others, because major upsets tend to involve the fan-favorite character losing, not winning (e.g. Magus vs. Knuckles or Kuja vs. Master Hand). We may never see this kind of upset again.
