So, I've been doing factory work for about 2 years now. And the stuff I'm doing now isn't hard at all for 10.68 an hour. But it gets really monotunus after a while too. Plus it's freaking hot as hell in the summer inside a factory. Double the heat and all. So I was thinking maybe a nice office data entry job instead? It will sure beat factory work any day I guess...

So would anyone recommend i give that a try instead? Because I really don't see myself advancing or anything here.

Nothing wrong with trying something different.

Worst case scenario: you dont like it and quit.

Me, Ive been doing in-house IT for four years now and its okay. Pays okay, have dental health and vision plan. Got a 401k that Im dropping into every other week.

Offices are typically decent for advancing, but if you don't have much in the way of a unique skillset (which I assume when you say you're looking at data entry), I will warn you that it can get plenty monotonous as well. Though at least offices have air conditioning...

If you're tired of what you're doing though, it's probably time for a switch.

You can always take a leave of absence at your current job to give the office job a try. I say to do it that way because if you don't like the office job, you can go back easier...

As for if you should, it's up to you. Personally, I always liked it better. But my situation might have been different in the military. But I usually like it better still. But if you wanted to do it, you should probably either have a unique skill that you study, or be decent all around with certain programs on computers(like excel and stuff). And it is nice to be in an office.

But you also have to remember that each office job is different. Based on the company and what the company itself does. And while factory work in usually physically draining, office work tends to usually be more mentally draining. But it could be a good experience, and sometimes, a switch is needed...

Thanks, man. But yeah. I know a few things here and there when it comes to computer programs and such. Most likely though it will be an entry level data entry job for me honestly. I don't know much beyond IT tech stuff that requires degrees and all. I just kinda want to leave the factory work behind. It does get physically demanding sometimes. Only sometimes though. And I hate being drained after work to where I'm about to pass out at home all the time. I guess i rather be mentally drained then physically drained. So I could have more energy during the day.

Mentally draining can be just as bad, just to let you know. It seems like it would be better, but not always. It depends on the person, though...

After two years you're only making $10.68 an hour? Get the hell out of there.

I will concur that monotonous office jobs are mentally draining, but what you're doing now sounds pretty shitty.

Yea, what State (or country) do you live? That's kinda low or Factory Work (unless youre just a General Laborer)

As for Office Jobs, well, again, maybe a Mail Room job would be cool, but be careful, the 'Office' workplace/ppl is very different from the Factory workplace. Alot of stuff you probably talk about in the Factory wouldn't fly in that type of environment.

That is surprisingly worth mentioning.

"Work appropriate talk" is enforced much more stringently in an office environment. Even cursing when something goes wrong is usually frowned upon. Cursing in every day talk is definitely frowned upon. And many subjects are off limits entirely.

I don't find it at all challenging to abide by these rules, but it's impressive seeing how different the mentalities are whenever I need to go out into the field for something.

TC is tired of having a monotonous job and wants a data entry job. Is that a joke? Data entry is very very very monotonous.

Most "entry level" jobs are fairly monotonous. You actually have to advance to a higher position to get past the monotony. Going from entry level factory work to entry level office work isn't really advancing. It's a sideways lateral move, not an upward promotion. You might be better off trying to advance at the factory where you currently work, especially if getting a non-monotonous job is your goal.

You know, Ive been thinking the same thing lately.

Mainly for my health and not so much because Im bored with my job.

I work at a grocery store and its exhausting. You wouldnt think so, but its very physically AND mentally exhausting.

Ive worked myself to the point of injury doing this type of work and its like.. I kinda wanna get away.

Problem is, even though Im not making a lot of money (about $600 a week when I get eight hours overtime in addition to the regular 40) I dont know what kind of work to go for that will pay that much. I definitely want two days a week off too. Twelve years of six days a week hauling shit around has completely burnt me out.

Data entry doesn't pay that well. Maybe around $15/hr, which I guess is an improvement over what you currently make, but it's still not that good.

Do you have a college degree? If so, you should be aiming higher than factory work or data entry. If not, then why not go back to school and get a degree?

If you don't want to go to a traditional university, trade school is also an option. Many people never think about trade school, but many trades are very good careers with good salaries. Trades are careers like plumbers, electricians, carpenters, HVAC, and that kind of stuff. Those jobs won't be boring and monotonous either.

Even so, $15 an hour would be good enough for me honestly. Even if its a little more. As for getting a degree... thats sort of an issue. Id just rather work and make money to pay the bills and all. Im not sure I can handle both a job and school at the same time as it is when I come home so tired enough from what I do every day. The thing with a traditional university though is that im not one of those people who wont get into debt and that includes the insane high costs of tuition. I dont want to pay that off for the rest of my life. However...I mean, I honestly actually thought about getting into the fire fighting academy at one point. At the community college here. Kinda still am considering it too...
