Just when you think a college student couldn't be anymore insufferable, they backpack through Europe, ok?

I didnt backpack through <.< wouldnt have survived.

Well, it is more dangerous thanks to the refugee crisis and, of course, those torture hostels.

Doesn't really matter if you can check references when those are wrong anyway.

Assuming you've never been, if you're going with a group, do not leave your group. Chicago is not safe for anybody unfamiliar with it.

It's not detroit or st. louis

Honestly in all those cities, it depends where you are. The worst crime in all of those cities are usually contained to areas that tourists usually don't go to, and are easy to avoid. And as long as you aren't doing anything stupid or looking for trouble, you'll likely never be a victim of crime in any of those cities. For Chicago(where I live), the worst of the crime is limited to parts of the city most don't go to.

The crime issue is overblown in each of those cities, IMO. As long as you do your research on each of those cities before traveling, you will be fine. Yes even in Detroit and Saint Louis, I felt fine visiting those cities.

Whats the difference between a town and a city in the US? I would have thought with such a small population and relatively little infrastructure (from the wiki page at least) that would be considered a town.

Over here I think town/city is determined by having a church which I dont know if its still the case anymore but I never understood it.

The real distinction is between a village and a city though. Where a village generally has a low population

By definition there isnt one, at least not country-wide. In Texas there are areas that are not part of any municipality called unincorporated areas. Then there are towns which are usually small. And then towns can take a vote on whether theyd like to be called a town/village/city etc. as far as I know there are no legal implications, either. Again, at least not in Texas.

That's just Wikipedia making a mistake. It is definitely a town when its that small.

Population density for the most part, plus the government structure is different. Cities have mayors, towns often have aldermen. Generally speaking, though, there's very little in the way of formal distinction. Some towns are large enough to be cities and have mayors, but still call themselves towns.

Have you heard of the concept of research? For instance maybe the legal definition of cities and towns may vary depending on the overall government, such as the state government, and therefore what defines a city may vary depending on the state. No. Because you read a single article.

What part of 'research' dont you get? Wait, you're the guy that didn't know what 'period' meant so this makes sense. Dont worry, I'll do your research for you.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Town
Since the Tenth Amendment to the United States Constitution largely leaves local-government organization to the individual U.S. states, the definition (if any) of "town" varies widely from state to state. In some states, the term "town" refers to an area of population distinct from others in some meaningful dimension, typically population or type of government. The characteristic that distinguishes a town from another type of populated place a city, borough, village, or township, for example differs from state to state. In some states, a town is an incorporated municipality; that is, one with a charter received from the state, similar to a city (see incorporated town), while in others, a town is unincorporated. In some instances, the term "town" refers to a small incorporated municipality of less than a population threshold specified by state statute, while in others a town can be significantly larger. Some states do not use the term "town" at all, while in others the term has no official meaning and is used informally to refer to a populated place, of any size, whether incorporated or unincorporated. In still other states, the words "town" and "city" are legally interchangeable.

For Texas:
In Texas, although some municipalities refer to themselves as "towns" or "villages" (to market themselves as an attractive place to live), these names have no specific designation in Texas law; legally all incorporated places are considered cities.

So no, it's not Wiki making a mistake, it's you not looking shit up.

America is the nation, the United States of America is the state. You can say the same for Mexico and France as nations and United Mexican States and the French Republic as the states. Two similar but different concepts. The government is not the people.
