10 y/o Savannah Watters from Cedar Falls, Iowa was selling cookies on the street corner so she can buy CLOTHES for school but her neighbors blew the whistle on her and called the cops THREE TIMES!!

She said she dreams of being a professional baker and was testing out her skills by baking cookies with her mom and selling it on the streets but neighbors were not impressed and called 5-0 because of the increased traffic

Her mom, Kara said "No one had talked to me about anything, they just took it upon themselves and called 911. The police show up to talk to my daughter."

She's been baking and selling sweets for 5 weeks for multiple hours a day and filled up a cooler with her goods as he waits for customers. It was a massive success as she earned 250 smackers on ONE DAY where she will buy school cloths with them.

Savannah said "I enjoyed it a lot, so then i wanted to have a cookie shop with my mom cause it's always been a dream to do that, i just wish i could've just kept staying there"

Neighbors were pissed however because traffic increased in the area in their "quiet" lane as police first came out when she sold cookies without an adult around and the other 2 were called because cars were switching from 40mph street onto their 25mph drive

Savannah had to move back a few feet from the curve as neighbor, Melissa Winberg admitted to blowing the whistle because a customer almost hit her daughter!!. She said "We've had too many people coming in that we don't know. My daughter was in our driveway riding her bike, and a car pulled in and almost hit her. We had 3 semis, a dump truck, 4 cars parked along the road. To be honest, if her mom wants to open a cookie shop, there are other ways of doing it than making her 10 y/o daughter sit on the corner for 7 hours a day"

Savannah still has the option to sell cookies on the driveway and is still taking orders from customers she gave business cards to as now she'll have to figure out a way to do it somewhere else...

Though really, that sounds like an opportunity for a partnership with the police. She keeps selling cookies, and a couple of cops stake out the immediate area and hand out tickets to anyone driving dangerously. Everyone makes money and the driving gets safer.

Those must be some pretty awesome cookies if she's drawing that kind of traffic to a roadside stand, though.

This is called a "negative externality." My gut reaction is to think, "let her sell her cookies in peace." But maybe the neighbors have a point. It's just that they went too far in involving the police I think. You can usually solve issues like this in-person.

...because then they'd be outed in these stories. People fucking know how it goes. You can no loner talk to somebody as a first line of action. And anybody who would have their kid out there every day for several hours a day probably wouldn't capitulate to a talking-to.
