One of my best friends use to be strongly against going into the military but ever since he graduated college he's been really desperate to find a job and get out of his parents house but he had no luck there.
Just sent me a text message saying he's going to try to do do part-time with the National Guards.

I have a handful of other friends who enlisted to the army and stuff not too long ago too and an older brother in the Air Force.
It makes me feel all empty on the inside :(

National Guard is only one weekend a month and two training weeks out of the year. Depending on MOS, they can be activated at any time, and be full time active Army for years. This happened to me, I enlisted originally for NG 4 year term, was deployed 3 months in and spent the remaining 3 years 9 months active Army.

Do your 20 years and get your pension. It goes by faster than you think. Don't believe all the libs you tell you that you'll die. There are plenty of non-combat positions.

This also. You can learn a quality skill that will never put you in direct, or even indirect combat.

Funny enough, everybody is always egging me on to join with them, but I really don't want to. It is tempting sometimes. I bet it would make school go by a whole lot faster.

There's literally nothing wrong with the military, besides the overwhelming soulcrushing amount of bureaucracy -_-.

1 - They actually revised the retirement plan. You do get a pension at 20, but you don't have to go the full 20 to get certain benefits (the Department matches contributions to your TSP up to 5%).

2 - I'm a liberal and I never tell anyone they're going to die...

My brother is in the Air Force and he's always telling me I should join. "You'd love it," he would say.

All the branches have their pros and cons. Air Force is probably the easiest for most people to adapt to but there are some disadvantages to that. The Navy has maintained these artificial awkward barriers between the ranks but at the same time that helps fortify the sort of fraternity between people, and in general a Navy Chief is going to be far more respected than an Air Force Master Sergeant.

No, the Air Force is legitimately better in pretty much every way, unless you're specifically looking for combat. The extreme majority of the jobs are at a desk, tye PT requirements are the most lax, the training is the shortest and least rigorous, the on-base amenities are superior to all other branches, etc.

It does. However, after my time in the Marines, if I go back into the military, I'm gonna be an Airman.

They call it the Chairforce for a reason.

Anyway, I'm currently in DEP for the Navy. I ship out to basic training in September. Got an Information Systems Technician rate, assuming my top secret clearance is approved.

The Air Force objectively has harder physical fitness requirements than the Navy.

@Esrac - Why did you choose that over CTN or any other CT rating specifically? Also good luck (and I wouldn't go around mentioning clearances online, especially GameFAQs) >_>.

I'm not going to share any top secret information I might get access to, but getting top secret clearance for the position is in the job description. Not exactly hidden knowledge.

I went into MEPS and they tried to get me to take a computer rating on a submarine. I declined and told them I would much prefer something in IS, IT, or CTN. The next morning I went in and they offered me IT and I accepted. They have offered to let me take the DLAB to see if I qualify for CTI, but I'm more interested in working with computers, networks, etc. than I am learning a foreign language.

Looking over my ASVAB (I got a 93) line scores recently, I think I was actually short the CTN requirement by 1 point. You need a combination of 4 fields to add up to 235 or higher and they add up to 234 for me.

I did do some research online beforehand though. With the right certifications and top secret clearance, you can make a pretty good living in the private sector with IT on your resume and the Navy can provide those certs while I'm on active duty.

The information that a person with that rating might have a clearance isn't necessarily anything secret, but it's also not something you should go around voluntarily advertising either.

Well anyway, sounds like you did your research on it so that's good. A lot of people see IT and just think "I want to work on computers lol" without knowing what it fully entails, what the benefits and drawbacks are.
