I assume the point he's making is that people have had time to play, or have already played, Mario Kart and Tropical Freeze previously. That's not true with Breath of the Wild, so counting it in the same way isn't all that fair

It really demonstrates how Mario is in a different stratosphere than the Zelda series. Though to be fair, BotW also sold 1 million on Wii U, but that still doesnt catch Odyssey, with 7 extra months on sale even.

For Nintendo it really is Pokmon, Mario, and everyone else

I don't know if I necessarily agree with that last statement. Even if Mario sits on an extremely stronger platform of sales than Zelda, Zelda would be alone then in the Nintendo arsenal. Everything else aside from Smash Bros. would sell a small fraction of what Zelda normally does, and I can't imagine that any franchise outside of Mario and Pokemon sells the sheer amount of merchandise that Zelda does.

DC always claims that it has a Trinity of top stars, but in reality there are other characters who historically have outsold at least Wonder Woman. I can't imagine that in the "trinity" of Nintendo, anyone aside from Smash (which really is an unfair comparison) sells in the Mario/Pokemon/Zelda range.

It's an interesting discussion to me, at least.

Yeah from a global gaming perspective Zelda doesn't touch Mario or Pokemon. The closest series to touch them (besides splitting Mario Kart from Mario) would be Animal Crossing and then Super Smash Bros. The Wii series (if it's still alive) has lost a step during the WiiU. Splatoon could make a run for top of tier two if Nintendo continues to grow the series.

those are incredible numbers for a Zelda game, easily making it the best selling game in the series.
those are average numbers for a Mario game though i expect the usual Mario legs will pull it to 2-3 times that before the Switch dies. i'm curious to see how well Zelda's are since it's keeping things really close.

Not this time, Breath of the Wild sold over a million there on Switch alone which is enormous.

Also, Breath of the Wild has probably sold comparably to Mario Odyssey when you count the Wii U version. That is a huge deal for a Zelda game, this is easily the best selling entry in the series.

That's an undeniable boon, but to be fair, so was Twilight Princess.

The other really impressive thing is that the Switch version of BotW alone is easily the highest selling Zelda game, while Twilight Princess needed both the Wii and Gamecube versions to top OoT.

Mario and Pokemon may sell more, but you're underestimating the intangibles that Zelda has over them. No other Nintendo series generates as much hype in the west among people who play games a good amount. Mario at it's best cannot beat Zelda at its best in terms of acclaim. That matters - acclaim generates future trust in a company's ability to put out quality products. Mario may have sold more and been extremely well-received, but people simply were not losing their shit over it like they were with Zelda.

To put it simply: Mario was not an 'event'. Zelda was.

I really hope LG P/E undersells, given how lazy of a game it is. Especially LG P to show how overrated of a Pokemon it is.

I'd disagree that it matters enough to put Zelda over Mario, or even in the same league as Mario/Pokemon.

Odyssey was pretty comparable to BotW in hype, and while Zelda games may beat out Mario games in hype and acclaim on the average, they don't do so by enough to make up for sales differences.

The Lets Go Eevee/Pikachu games are easily gonna clear 2M in Japan alone. I dont think they look good at all, but Pokemon is an absolute monster so theres no way that game will bomb

Also the most recent comparison beyond Odyssey/BotW would be the Galaxy games and Skyward Sword.

They'll sell a lot, but the question is if they sell as much as other Pokemon games. Hopefully Gen 8 greatly outsells them.
