Giant Bomb was literally founded because Jeff Gerstmann got canned from Gamespot because he gave a game a score the publisher didn't deem high enough.

Like it blows my mind when I see people point to scores from sites like IGN or Polygon as proof of a game's quality when it's clear the reviewers for these sites are literally just paid shills of publishers

Fans who throw tantrums over an 8/10 review intimidate reviewers far more than any publisher could.

I laugh at Polygon because that website and their reviewers are hot garbage, not because they're paid shills

It's both, they have to just slap a number the publisher deems acceptable and can then regurgitate their shit rhetoric all underneath even if it makes no sense relative to the game or score

Fans grossly inflate scores so now only 8/10 and above is deemed playable.

What's an example?

Witcher 3 and GTA 5. I'll try to find the original versions I have screencapped but the GTA 5 one pretty much just whined about how no women were playable and their Witcher 3 review boiled down to "boobs are icky"

He's saying they paid for the score, and that's why it didn't match the rest of the review.

IIRC those reviews were scored lower than average. So that doesn't really make sense either.

But we're talking like 8/10 instead of 9-10/10.

Gamers have this funny mindset where a game that's reviewed too high is paid for and a game that's reviewed too low is clickbait.

His example in the OP was a punishment made after the review too. If they simply asked for a score it wouldn't have happened.
Square-Enix did the same thing around the same time for Team Xbox and Final Fantasy XIII.

There can be conflicts of interest but ZP simplifies the issue as always. He never really knows what he's talking about. Paying for a review score is way too blatant.

So you think game developers get someone to write a musical score for them and then don't pay them? How cheap are those guys?

What I said happened exactly like that. Gertsmann has said.

He scored Kane and Lynch 2 lower than what they paid for and then threatened to pull ads so Gamepot canned him for it.

That is not "exactly what he said"

The threat was always about pulling advertising money. As in the ads plastered on the site. Not disobeying a bribe.

Out of all of the hundreds of journalists out there that have written articles that have criticized how the gaming industry works (especially reviews) why do you think there hasn't been a single one who has claimed their outlet sold review scores.

I have read all sorts of things like review boot camps and reviewers trying to get jobs in PR for gaming publishers but nothing that obvious and blatant.

Gee, why would they threaten to pull ad money? It's almost like they were upset they dudn't get an acceptable score for what they paid for.

Because they'd get blacklisted and would have no career, Gertsmann was a huge fucking whistleblower for this shit and the fact you outright deny it, only shows how willfully ignorant you are. And all for the sake of defending faceless mega corporations from the criticism of consumers

Absolutely pathetic

Because they didn't want to advertise their game on a site that didn't give them a good review and GameSpot buckled because they were cowards.

It's a completely different controversy than what you are claiming.

They buckled because they already had obligations to follow after being prepaid for a good score, stop this desperate corporate shilling
