I've looked around for the private servers for these games and they seem to always have around 5-50 players playing in them when I check the server status. Whereas with the PSO clones I've been playing on PS4, God Eater and Toukiden have zero games available every damn time I check. I feel like PSO/PSU will never die and that's a good thing. I dunno why Sega couldn't keep at least the PC versions of both these games up since there's obviously demand for them.
I'd like to play the Gamecube version online eventually, and maybe the PC version of PSU eventually.

I've been aware of the private servers forever, but I have a weird thingy where I can't play it... some weird mental moral obstruction, I can't pirate anything.

The owner of Sylverant has stated that he's against piracy and wants people to play on his server with a legitimate copy of the game, even states that he can't guarantee you'll keep your account with a pirated copy of the game.
I'm also very against piracy myself. I refuse to use torrents and anything like that.
In this case, PSO's sole selling point was that you could play online, now there's no official way to do so, and that is Sega's fault. They technically screwed over every single person who ever bought and supported their game.
Everquest has had its official servers up since 1999. Why couldn't Sega do the same? IMO, there are absolutely no moral wrongdoings being done by playing a legitimate copy of the game on private servers.

I played on a private server once. How'd they do the hosting? Was the server reverse engineered, code leaked, or what? Cause from a technical standpoint reverse engineering sounds like a bitch.

I played both 1+2 and 3 online on my GCN back in the day. They were pretty fun.

I have the Universe games on PS2. Want to try Online, but the only one I ever found was for Xbox, after Live had shut down making it completely unusable, since you needed to connect to Live at least when you first start the game.

Someone should send me their Gamecube copy. :P

Happy memories of PSO and PSOv2 on the Dreamcast

Only stopped playing because I no longer had a way to pay

Revolutionary when you stop and think about it. Lag free gameplay over a dial up modem.. and with todays tech I can't even get a lag free match on Splatoon

No adapter for the Cube, is that required for the game? My Wii is backwards compatible, but it can't do the region locked stuff with my Region Free disc if I remember correctly.

I hate how Nintendo consoles never have an ethernet port. Gotta use Wifi or get an adapter. From what I know it seems the Wii, Wii U and Switch ethernet adapters suck and they overheat easily. It's kinda lame that the Gamecube is the only Nintendo console that did ethernet right with the broadband adapter.

To play the private servers yeah, you either need Gamecube broadband adapter or the Wii wifi. To play offline you don't need it though.

I can deal with offline. I was probably going to play single player no matter what anyway, New Zealand means I'm a distance away from anyone I'd play with.

I played a ton of PSO Blue Burst on private servers.

It's been about a year since I last logged into any of them though.

I have a copy of pso+ and you just need to mod your wii and run it through a program that spoofs your ip to get recognized by the private server.

100% legal.

I think I'm one of the few people who enjoyed the game without online. Had a friend I could play with locally though. But would often play solo as it was his game and thus I often had to catch up to him level wise

They got PSO working online through the Wii?? That was not an option when I tried years back. I played on SCHTHACK for years but I haven't been on in a long while. It sucks due to the rampant cheating but it was still fun to play. Also, is it really stealing when we are talking about something that is not produced or bringing in money anymore? It is not like Sega loses anything from a "stolen" copy of PSO.

Yep.

Most fun way to do it.

You can even hook up usb keyboard for chatting just like on gc back in the day.

Ill probably sell my copy if I can find it. Average copy of pso 1&2+ is going for 200 minimum it seems. I got my copy for around 70 a couple years back.

The Gamecube has this:

https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-GameCube-ASCII-Keyboard-Controller/dp/B0000694RM/

Pricey, ($120+) but I actually like the looks of that better. You don't need to switch between controller and keyboard that way.

Still pisses my beat friend off. He tried selling his copy a decade or so ago and GameStop legit refused to buy it because their system calculated it was worth less than a penny.

Fast forward to closer to this year some local game store wanted to charge him 160 for it.

Private servers are not piracy. People still have to buy copies of the game to play on private servers. Unless obviously they just pirated the game anyway.
