Farm groups are going on the offensive with a multimillion-dollar advertising and advocacy campaign against President Donald Trumps tariffs just days after the administration rolled out a $12 billion bailout for farmers harmed by a mounting trade war.

Anyone know what farmers side on with immigration? I would think that are in favor of it because they get so much cheap labor. Why would they even vote for Trump in the first place?

People ignorantly vote against their best wishes all the time. most of them probably don't even understand what you said...and you could say it to them right now and they still wouldn't realize it because their preconceived notions outweigh any potential common sense.

Out of curiosity, do you think this applies to democrats too? I see the "people are too stupid to vote in their own best interests" line I lot, but it seems exclusively to be applied to republican voters.

consider the fact that we imposed tariffs that harmed those farmers, theoretically bringing in more money (mostly to spite other countries but you get the idea)...but now we're using more money to save those farmers that wouldn't have been affected if we didn't impose those tariffs to begin with. this is what our country has become...

There are about 550,000 homeless people in the US.

12 billion dollars divided by 550,000 gives about 21,800 $

Enough to give housing to all homeless people in the US for at least 2, maybe even 3 years.

But let's just throw that taxpayer money at farmers to convince them to vote for Trump.

it definitely could but when we're talking about low to middle class workers it mostly applies to Republican voters. a guy like Bill Gates voting Democrat is technically voting against his best wishes but he's fine with, for example, paying more in taxes and creating more social programs. A random farmer in the South is being affected much more by voting Republican, and this is just one example.

Most Republican policies disproportionately benefit the wealthy. It only applies to a small percentage of Democrats.

Well put. A lot of people place a high value on abortion, or fiscal policy, or any other issue, and will swallow views they disagree with on one subject to support the issue they care most about.

There are definitely democrats who vote against their own interests--knowingly--and not just the super rich. I know many people who vote dem but do not agree with abortion, or do with abortion but not with social safety nets, etc.

To answer s0nicfan, yes, certainly, though not frequently in the way that was implied

To add to this, I remember some research out of U Virginia by Dr Haidt (I think) which found Republicans tend to be MORE likely to vote on single issues, even if the candidates other views ran contrary to their own, than Democrats (voting simply on single issues)
