Nobody starts off doing heroin. They start off doing oxycodone or vicodin, then move on to heroin because it's the same type of drug only heroin is 100x cheaper.

Because it's just a step up from other opiates like oxycodone and vicodin, as Geno said.

This is also why fentanyl can become such an epidemic. It's like heroin on steroids and much, much, MUCH more dangerous.

Exactly. A person with a super high opiate tolerance basically has two choices to get high. $10 worth of heroin or $100+ worth of pills.

like others have said, a lot of people might get prescribed strong opiates, but after their prescription has run out, they'll find that they have developed a dependency on the drug but no longer have ready access to it

and heroin is a cheaper alternative, so a lot of people who thought they would never get into end up being caught up by the drug

I wouldn't say nobody. Some people just dive in.

I mean generally people don't pick up heroin as their first drug of abuse.

I never said they did.

Never said you said they didn't tbh.

Just saying that heroin is never someone's first drug. Yeah, you don't have to be addicted to opiates before you try it, but that's generally how the average user starts using heroin.

People try it because their trusted doctors get them addicted to opiate based pain medicine, which is chemically identical to heroin. As genocet (very surprisingly) said, pharmaceutical addictions are usually the gateway to heroin.

People also clean up and then relapse, taking their normal dose, which kills them. I know a user here posted a story about a friend doing this, once.

Many people associate shooting it with death. They think that smoking it is not fatal, etc. The addicts you will see in substance abuse classes look like everybody. Its not just grungy, nasty kids

I think you are looking way too far into this. I was just making general conversation and pointing out that a lot of people try it without being addicted to pills or even doing pills to begin with and they just get hooked. People who are down for whatever and just like to get fucked up.

Wouldnt throw stones in glass houses?

I never said you said heroin is the first drug someone chooses.

All I did was clarify my point from the first response. Which you then agreed with.

You would only know what it felt like if you tried it before, though.

Once youve tried something like that, you never experience the same effects as you did on the first time. Thats why they call it chasing. Even if you detox completely, you never experience it again, which is why so many people die. They take fatal doses thinking that their body can handle it.

Ive never heard of a successful long-time heroin user.

You really would be surprised at how many people try it just to try it. It is a party drug--like coke, ecstasy, etc.

I know thats true, but I usually associate amphetamines with parties. That was until one of my friends died from heroin doing exactly what you said. Very tragic. Some people will try anything without thinking about it

It's crazy when you think about it like that and sad. I've heard the same thing when ever something like this is brought up and it makes me curious how good of a high is it to chase like that.

I'm really confused at both your tone and your point. Your original reply had nothing to do with my post. You weren't adding to my point so I wasn't understanding what you were trying to say.

I do get what you are saying now, I guess.

idk why, but it seemed like you read my first post as an "angry" post or something with your "don't put words in my mouth!" response. I was literally just adding to your post and saying that, well yes, people don't have to try opioids to start using heroin, it's never the first drug someone ever abuses. It's not like someone picks up a heroin needle and is like "yeah, this is the first drug I want to try!"

Heroin is definitely the one drug I would never, ever do, and would never argue for legalization. I do however support clean, safe injection sites. Heroin will likely always be a problem and it sucks to see people die because of unsafe needles and lethal doses while away from help.

i thought my parents had gotten the partying out of system by the late 20's. but i don't get to choose when i have the good times when financial outlook is fine.

once those drugs start taking over family. my life goes to shit.
it happened 6 times over the years all because of crack, meth or heroin.

each time i paid the price financially.

A handful of the people I know who got into that stuff started because of the dangers.

I've never met any heroin addict who wasn't initially turning to drugs for an absolute escape.

It's so fucked and opiates were so easy to access growing up. It's an epidemic.

Because all he said was GENERALLY SPEAKING, which you took to be some sort of weird ultimatum message he was saying and thought he was trying to put words in your mouth. He was just...conversing. lol
