You know. Not that skillful, pretty graphics, probably heavily about online gameplay and possibly don't even have a single-player mode.

I don't think Call of Duty and online FPS games are that casual tbh. You start these games and you suck, and there's a lot of not very intuitive stuff to learn. You play online and you always suck. Sure, they seem to attract people who are not "gamers", but they still seem to sink in an enormous amount of time into these games even if they also seem to be gym-going non-nerd bros.

On the other hand, much of what Nintendo puts out is super casual and lends itself to being able to pick up and play regardless of age or ability. A beginner can pick up Mario Kart or Kirby and be pretty decent at it (at least enough to play and enjoy) in like 5 minutes.

You can play a few matches of smash on your lunch break with people who have never played it before.

That to me is true casual gaming, not the idea of gatekeeping certain videogames on a more cultural lvel because they're not dorky enough for your tastes.

Any super popular phone game, can't get more casual than not needing a dedicated console or a PC of some kind, which can be played in spurt on the toilet.

Most of those games don't even have gameplay in them. Just jump on, tap the screen a few times and sign out.

What? How do you spend so much of something? Isn't FUT just the control system?

To be fair, COD takes a LOT of skill and practice to play very well, although I'd say that's less true for multi-player than for single-player, but it's still casual. You can just go around randomly shooting, there's lots of online support, and casual games do like their excellent graphics.

I own about 8 Call of Dutys, mostly on the 360, and have enjoyed them a lot, but there's definitely a lot of appeal to the casual gamer. For a while, COD was the Big Thing for gaming, I'd say about 2007 - 2011. It's not so big now, but still very big.

Are you kidding, DevsBro? Casual games adore that stuff. They want their online. I used to work in a video game story, and people often would buy stuff like COD and FIFA, and it was pretty obviously for online. They would ask about things like XBox Live and season passes (I hadn't even heard of season passes at the time).

That's one of the most annoying things about casual gamers is probably their love of online game. I bet some have never even fucking heard of split-screen multi-player gaming. Disgraceful.

As for Need for Speed, I guess in a way, a lot of racing games are casual. You just hold the accelerator, and turn left or right at the appropriate moments. Okay, that's reductive, but it's basically the case. The arcade style games, like Ridge Racer, or whatever, probably appeal a lot to casual gamers.

So does the Devil May Cry series. Die too many times you get an easy mode. Not uncommon for games to have mechanics that allow them to be more beginner friendly.

Having said that, it might be argued that this actually makes games harder to play (read: more aimed at hardcore gamers). If there's a way to play through a level easier, than that gives the developer's "permission" to make levels in the game harder, you know? A great example of this is Super Mario Galaxy 2. It was substantially harder than SMG 1, and they could do that because it had one or two ways of helping the player.

I mean I never ask anyone "are you a casual gamer and do you play online"; I just know that I've played online before and found it way too freaking hard to enjoy without dedicating my life to it.

Nintendo is the definition of casual. of course that's not a bad thing. They make great games.

Seems like some people forget what the ultimate point of games is, to have fun
