Why the fuck is it like this now? I know what it's going to be too. I show up, they look at me for 10 min. Either prescribe some medicine that will only fix the symptom or say oh you'll be ok.

I have a high deductible plan because I want to pay less, but I still end up paying $88 a month.

HDHPs and HSAs are just a way for employers to shift the growing cost of healthcare onto their employees, actually.

It is true that you get tax benefits from using an HSA, though.

I was actually scheduled for a colonoscopy, but it turns out my insurance doesn't cover this particular preventative exam until like 50, so it was going to be 500. Hope I don't have cancer.

So when you get into a car accident you aren't bankrupted completely, which it appears you will be. Better be safe cause fuck health insurance that's good!

On topic, my office visits are $30 max, with a $500 out of pocket maximum per year. Doctor visits and prescriptions go towards that deductible. Specialists and urgent care are $50 out of pocket. Out of network out of pocket maximum is also only $2000. I pay $42 per paycheck for it. Sounds like wherever you get your health insurance they are screwing you over and are forcing you to pay the burden of it. My company touts the healthcare plan as a reason to work here (and why the wages are shit).

They problem is that they look good up front; lower premiums, and you can sock away money tax free for use later. Plus a lot of companies (mine included) contribute money to your HSA in order to get you to switch.

But in reality I never want to go for the doctor for anything other than my free physical, because I have to pay a ton of money each time. It's basically behavioral economics at work, and I don't think it will have good long term outcomes.

HSA's are a complete scam if you actually have health concerns or children. Lord forbid your 11 year old break two bones in a year. You're fucked. Speaking from experience.

HDHPs is the worst. That's what I have right now because I'm in my early 20s and I think I'm fucking invincible. I had to schedule a doc appointment on the 1st of August that will probably run me $300+.

Just get a traditional plan. You never know what will happen. Insurance is a fucking scam but I'd rather get fucked gently throughout the year than completely demolished one day.

Do you have an HSA to go with it? The tax savings would have paid for several doctors appointments. It's like free money.

Yeah you have to factor in the difference in premiums between the two, how often you go to doctors in a typical year, HSA contributions made by your employer and your own HSA contributions. If you're young and healthy odds are you will be better off with a HDHP.

The entire concept of insurance only works when a sizable portion of the insured will never cash in on their insurance. Home owners, cars, boats, etc.

Since literally everyone will need health care, health insurance as a whole is not sustainable.

It's highly variable, but on average, Yyu usually only need one unexpected medical expense for the premium savings from selecting a HDHP to be wiped out.

To be fair, the calculation is different for people with a spouse and kids, but they also expect to have medical expenses more regularly.

Which if you're young and healthy would be a rare occurance overall and after years of saving on premiums and HSA contributions those would cover the unexpected medical expense up to your out of pocket max most likely depending on the cost differences.

If you're a family yeah it probably won't make sense to be on a HDHP.
