Took a fucking exam, 10 questions, 10 points each... some questions had 2 portions (5a, 5b) that were 2 different problems worth 5 a piece. okay, cool. I'M READY.

first question, find all complex zeros of a polynomial. show all work. I do it, (long ass stupid fucking problem where you show a shit ton of trial and error) and the end result was 6 different zeros. I got the sign on the last two complex zeros wrong. 5/10 points for that problem. Okay, bogus that i did everything right except fuck up on the sign when when doing the quadratic formula for the two complex zeros and only got half credit.. whatever. ROLL FORTH.

Every other problem on the test, I got all the answers right. But when we graph poly/rational/inverse functions and asymptotes (which was practically the next 7 problems), I write HA=1, VA=3 next to the asymptotes (to which he never even specified to do, i was just trying to be an over achiever)... He takes off 2 points for not writing HA: Y=1, VA: X=3... 14 points deducted bc of not writing the x&y with the asymptote, while most of the class got even worse for not writing it on the graph at all (even tho it was in their 'show the work' portion). Less than half the class ended up with a C, a and couple of Bs.... and the majority of the class failed the exam when most of the answers were correct and even showed the work... but bc of the technicality everyone is getting 1 or 2 letter grades lower on our exams.

This is the second time where he has given us an exam and took points off for bogus little shit that he was never specific about and the majority of the class ended up with a bad (or at least a letter lower) grade, over stuff like writing 1 1/2 instead of 3/2 when he never said anything about it the whole semester. And the whole damn class is getting the bulk of the solving, if not all of it, completely right.

Fuck you professor. I am going to fill the fuck out of that stupid feedback form we get at the end of the semester.

I will from now on. Although it wouldn't have mattered much this semester, summer math classes were pretty slim, and i needed to knock math out of the way so i can take CSCI next semester and get my AT around December. I didn't know this until the last second, so his class was the only one that wasn't full when i changed my registration.

When I was in college I had an algebra professor like that. Mix in the fact that he had a very heavy accent and was young and nervous too and you have a recipe for learning disaster. IIRC it was a summer class too.

Anyway hang in there.

LOL no it isn't. College algebra is for the kids who get 100% of the work incorrect in the first month and need damage control to not fail out of school.

Yea no. Math 102 is a general study required for an Associates where im going to school, amd a pre-req for the higher math courses when i keep going for my bachelor's.

College algebra is a remedial class at most universities.

The main place the analogy breaks down is that "Algebra" isn't a major, whereas "Physics" and "Chemistry" are.

I feel you TC. Getting half credit for the zeroes of polynomial problem is some bullshit

I really appreciate teachers that give you most points for at least getting the work right

Edit: I'm in pre calc right now, and just got done with the algebra portion. Class average on the midterm was a 62. I feel like you can't entirely blame that on the students

I was an undergraduate a long time ago but the remedial classe was called "Pre-Algebra". You had to test out of it or Pass it to take "Algebra" (Algebra II, I think it was called).

Which is also remedial.

Calculus is the first math that's not explicitly supposed to be covered in High School. Algebra II is pre-calculus.

You don't need Trig for most Business Calc courses, but as a broader category, yeah it fits under pre-calc.

I don't know. Maybe among math & science majors that is true, but I don't think others would agree. I went to a good school (an Ivy, many moons ago) and most non-math and science majors don't even get to calculus. YMMV.

It's not really a statement about the quality of a school or anything, but rather the national standards set for math achievement in high school.

In addition, the SAT/ACT covers math up but not including calculus (Geometry, Algebra 1-2, Trig) and these tests are developed to test explicitly high school knowledge.

Now that doesn't mean that everyone retains that information when they get to college obviously, but that doesn't make it any less remedial.

Yes and no. I mean, i put HA=# on the X-axis right next to the dotted line I drew that covered all y=#, while i put VA=# up top next to the vertical dotted line that covered all x=#.

My point was tho, it was never even specified to do. Not on the test nor verbally.

Yeah, that seems like a pretty bad rubric for the first question. You even wrote the correct formula, so you essentially lost 5 points for putting 4 instead of -4... which after having you do a bunch of instances of synthetic division seems like it's not worth half the points.

It's literally a required course for most majors and it's completely irrelevant to how you perform in high school (unless you take it while you're in high school w/ dual enrollment). Are you guys this obtuse?

No, we just didn't get stuck taking a low level math class in college. Imagine how embarrassing it would be to be taking algebra in college. LOL

When did you go to high school?

Not that Uncle Choad is morally right (because it's not your fault if your school didn't cover something), but if it was anytime in the last 20 years, your school was deficient in mathematics. No amount of "I didn't see this" is going to make this "university level math".
