Dude's a sales executive who is now mentoring new reps and trying to talk to me about coming on board. Please help me gauge how true this might be:

He says it's all commission, but he hasn't made less that $4,500 in a month and is looking at $8,000-$10,000 just for this month. This is for 50-hour work weeks but is the easiest and best job he's ever had according to him.

Does this line up with any of your experiences working there? Or the people you know working there? He knows how to talk up a good game (again, sales) and I just wanna get a broader sense of what's up.

Are you expecting Board 8 members to be former Verizon employees? Everything I'm about to say is from an outside perspective, so take it with a grain of salt.

If it's all commission good luck w/ that. The only way you're going to pull any sort of significant wages from that is selling to business, which you probably have already figured out. There's only so many suppliers in the market, and the differentiation between them isn't so large (iirc you're in NYC, so quality of service should be more or less standardized across your competition). At that point you're all just stuck in an endless circle jerk of stealing customers from each other by undercutting each others prices. If he / Verizon isn't providing you with a ton of good leads you're not gonna come anywhere close to making that kind of money. Even if they are --- you're probably not making that kind of money. There are a lot of sales reps out the bast majority are not making 120k a year. If it were that simple to make that w/ Verizon they wouldn't be looking for reps, reps would be flocking to them.

That said if you have nothing going on and want to take on a job where you define your hours and see how it goes what's the harm in trying it out.

Sounds like if he were trying to get you on board for a pyramid scheme.

Job sounds too good to be true, especially if it's all commission. Me, personally, would tell him "thanks but no thanks".

Back in Tennessee now, no longer NYC.

Thanks ya'll -- just wanted to double-check my murky feelings on this with some outside perspective. I wasn't sure if other people had worked there or not, but I wanted to ask and see. Told him no but I appreciate it.

It's certainly possible to earn that. I don't work for Verizon but I work on the Operations side for a company who has commission only based sales staff

Its feast or famine stuff. You either excel at it and rake it in or you earn terrible wages. There doesn't seem to be a midground. And if its anything like our sales staff, the turnover is huge. It's rare to get people sticking around for years as the work is soul destroying plus people struggle to manage the inconsistent wages

Do you like to bother and pressure people? Do you enjoy doing whatever it takes to get in the door? Great salespeople need to enjoy those sorts of things to make the sort of money you're talking about. If you possess those sales traits go for it.

But I can tell you from experience that sales is the worst thing you can do if you don't have the instincts for it.

Sounds too good to be true.

Have him show you a paystub of when he first started.

Tell him to give you a month of his pay and you'll give him 3 months of your pay. Raise it to 6 or even 12 to figure out his limit. Then just take the money and run.
