I'd say $1700 is a lot to spend on someone, regardless of income. Especially on something that's main purpose is SUPPOSED to be symbolic.

I spent about $5k and my salary was probably only around $60k at the time. I felt like that was normal. I personally don't see much value in a piece of metal and stone, but I didn't want to make a statement about materiality at my wife's expense.

This.

I was all ready to side with the dude, but she went to a forum to anonymously vent her feelings. I got a much better ring for my wife than that and I make a fraction of what he makes and no, I didnt spend a fortune or go into debt or the ol x months of salary crap.

Honestly it feels like he didnt put much thought or effort into it.

Replying to both of these since they are a similar message. So at the end of the day, you're still down talking the guy for "not spending enough based on his income", which is similar logic to the "x months of salary" thing. If she's mad that she thought he should have spent more, then there are really not many ways to frame it other than her being materialistic about it. About something where the value is supposed to be more symbolic.

In return I get offended incels and angry female supremacists claiming that a guy must lose his savings and go through sacrifice in order to thank somebody with a vagina to marry him.

You do you. I'm not arguing with anyone's logic that rings are materialistic, but don't expect all women to be rational about these things. There's a time and place to take a stand on your beliefs.

Personally, I save well so I was by no means hurting after spending $5k.
