Engagement/wedding rings are a scam, an unfortunate scam that has been nailed into our culture that every couple is suppose to have one. When I went shopping for one, I brought my wife along so she can pick exactly what she wanted so she wouldn't get disappointed. Luckily she has the same opinion about them not being worth it, we got the cheapest one so other people would stop bitching about it to us.

That was me. And the act of shelling out a huge amount of money for a rock does, at its base level, represent a commitment by the man. It's not "in order to get the sacred vagina", it's a signal that he wants to commit for the rest of his life to her. Yeah you could make the argument that the woman doesn't have to make that same type of purchase to prove her loyalty but ideally she would be doing so in other ways.

I don't necessarily agree with it, especially considering the horrible shit that goes down at diamond mines and the fact jewelers price gouge the fuck out of the cost, but I think it's facetious to just say you're buying off her sex with money.
