And, while Germany has a *lot* of problems right now, it's still probably the best choice. I like Japan, but the country is recessed, there's a generational imbalance, people still routinely work themselves to death, etc, so it's got a few more knocks than Germany. The only other consideration might be Italy, but Germany is pretty much the EU's workhorse. Culture-wise, Germany is broadly inferior to Italy and Japan, though, which have richer histories, more vibrant cuisines, etc. Fiji was never a serious answer. I say Japan, but my reasoning is because I actually went to Kagoshima City once (on the island of Kyushu; for like two~three days' visit). My older brother was in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Okinawa for a few years and briefly met us there.
^ I can say both my brother and I have [minimal] experience of Japan to share with the rest of our family. All I can really claim to have learned is that there's a crater lake where a rare giant eel species lives, and I've seen smooth pumice stones on several beaches there (considering the volcanic activity).
