Turtwig and Piplup are both kino. I never liked chimchar because I don't like monkeys. The final stages are all great looking.

Same. Even if he was the best, I just couldn't pick him.

Competitively, Infernape.

Design wise, Torterra. Not just the coolest sinnoh starter, but the coolest starter period

I always liked Empoleon because he has one of the most resistant dual-types available. Plus he's a penguin and penguins are fucking awesome.

I always kind of liked Turtwig/Torterra, but I can never bring myself to not pick Piplup/Empoleon.

Morning bump

What advantages does Torterra have, if any? Infernape is best of the three for all-out offense and Empoleon has the best defense (resistance-wise) of any starter ever, but Torterra?

He looks way cooler than the others. He also looks cooler than Venusaur, Charizard, Blastoise, Meganium, Typhlosion, Feraligatr, Sceptile, Blaziken, Swampert, Serperior, Emboar, Samurott, Chesnaught, Delphox, Greninja, Decidueye, Incineroar, and Primarina.

STAB Earthquake is always nice too.

If I find out a starter has steel in it, I pick that evolution line.

I was honestly disappointed by infernape. I think it took too much damage and it couldnt even learn fighting TMs!

It was supposed to be fire/fighting, but it never learned any good fighting moves and you couldnt make it learn them.

I personally like Piplup/Empoleon more, but in reality, only Infernape is the only none shit starter in Gen 4

Empoleon is fine competitively, especially since the introduction of Fairy types thus boosting the viability of Steel types. I actually prefer Empoleon to Infernape since it's a great utility mon and both of them are UU

Infernape learns Close Combat at level 41 (Monferno learns it at level 36)
It can also learn Rock Smash and Brick Break via HM/TM

All were great starters, but Infernape > Empoleon > Torterra. I love how they're all dual type. Chose Empoleon in Diamond, and Infernape in Pearl

Wood Hammer hurts the user pretty bad though, doesn't it? And all the other grass moves it learns (except Razor Leaf) go off of his Special Attack stat, which is significantly lower than his high Attack.

Fortunately, it can at least get Seed Bomb as a tutor/egg move. You can round him out with Crunch and Iron Head for 4 100% accuracy, 80+ power physical attacks and an Adamant nature for a pretty buff (but slow) attacker.
