Every element of Octopath Traveler comes together brilliantly to create a refreshing take on the genre. While it channels the spirit of old favorites, it never feels derivative. It genuinely does feel like a 16-bit RPG that has evolved into something new rather than being mere nostalgia-bait. Even if its visual tricks can feel strained at times, I admire the way Traveler sidesteps and even corrects the mistakes that other RPGs tend to make in trying to recapture the essence of the Super NES era. Its informed by the classics, but it never feels blind or slavish. While I dont feel comfortable putting a score on this review until Ive completed the game and seen how (or if) the stories come together, I can confidently say that anyone whos been pining for a great RPG will not be disappointed by Octopath Traveler... whether they want a vintage experience or a brand-new one.

Kick ass bro

Neat. I'll get a used or discounted copy later. I don't like JRPGs enough to spend a full 60 on it. Love the art style tho

Do we have confirmation that the 8 teams join together? I'm interested in this game but I have no desire to try to juggle 8 separate campaigns.

You pick up every character in chapter 1, but I'm pretty sure it's 8 separate stories. As in, there doesn't appear to be an overarching main plot that I can see.

Isn't that one of the main criticisms? There is absolutely nothing tying the stories together, not even any interaction between the different characters, even though they're fighting together. That feels like it would put a huge damper on any enjoyment I get out of playing an individual story.

Is there at least some sort of "final chapter" way at the end that unlocks when you beat all 8 previous stories? Anything like that?

There's not nothing. Some characters have problems that are solved with other characters abilities.

We don't know. Signs point to no or it's something like Legend of Mana where there are three main quests and competing any of them let's you challenge the final boss but you can also complete all three.

I've read mixed things on that. Some people who have the game say that your party chats with each other and there are overlapping stories. I don't know what's accurate though.

No idea. I would hope so, seems like a real missed opportunity if not.

This would really kill it for me, I feel. One of my favourite things about FFX was the deep bond all the characters had. You could feel this when they initially rejected Tidus because he was too much of an outsider.

I'm not against the idea of "no overarching final chapter". To play devil's advocate, many games have tried to "tie everything together", and I can't say they do well every time. Either they end up focusing too much on one or two favorite characters and everyone else falls by the wayside, or they try to even it out and it ends up diluted. Or it's simplistic, like one bad guy who was like "I'm behind it all!" and everyone just has to kill him, which is kinda bog-standard.

But we'll see.

Sadly that seems to be the odd review out. Others seem to be low 8s. Now that's not a bad thing as this still seems to be a solid game but one where personal opinion matters. The IGN guy clearly god much more invested in the game then some other reviewers did.

Reviewers further in the game have said that there is character interaction once you get to character's second chapters. But the same ones weren't far enough along to see how intertwined they get.

I wonder if it's meaningful character interaction and not just gimmicky mentions of other storylines.

I want to love this game but I'll remain cautious for now.

I mean that makes sense though. You said it yourself, ones a bland ripoff of something done extremely recent while the other was inspired by decades past and pays faithful homage for those who want an updated and refined journey back.

I don't like reviews in general for the most part and have no love for IGN but what's the problem?

A thing you have to keep in mind with sites like IGN is that there are different people doing the reviews, so the opinion is not gonna be the same across the board.

I feel like a lot of people neglect that when they compare reviews from them.
