I hear that the game becomes challenging once you go past chapter one.

Is there any unique gimmick to the combat, or is it standard fare turn based RPG menu combat? The game looks gorgeous but I just don't have it in me to play a normal JRPG anymore because of how tedious the combat is (which is like 99% of the actual game time)

I've come around and might be willing to pay full price for it tbh. I actually have been looking for a good turn based JRPG for a while and the story in this one so far has been fun.

I started with the thief. I guess the character you choose first is always in your party?

Well, from the demo all enemies have a weakness meter. So an enemy may be weak to, say, bows and lightning attacks. Each time you hit the enemy with one of its weaknesses the weakness meter goes down. Once it hits zero, they are stunned for a turn and take more damage during that time.

Additionally, each character builds up boost points, one point per turn for a maximum of five points. You can use between one to three boost points to attack multiple times or otherwise enhance your moves.

You earn skill points after each battle which you can use to pick your new spells. Each character has different skills and a different unique ability during battle. The two characters I got into my party could summon beasts and concoct potions out of raw ingredients you have.

So there are some unique quirks with the combat, but I dunno if you can consider that enough.

I mean, it's a turn-based JRPG. Unless you forget how to heal, you can't lose to anything but attacks that one-shot you (or force everyone to heal every turn until all resources are exhausted).

My biggest complaint is that the world is boring as hell outside of the main story content. Towns are just a collection of buildings that you can't enter; the overworld is just a bunch of trails with (ugh) random battles; there don't seem to be puzzles; NPCs are just stationary path action checklists with one line outside of path actions. When I enter a new town in a RPG, I'm normally excited to explore all the buildings and alleys looking for secrets, but the towns in Octopath were literally just the usual collection of shops, a couple simple sidequests, and a new party member who joins me for who the fuck knows why since we don't even talk to each other.

It makes no sense how you can start with Alfyn, whose objective is just to help bring health and happiness to the world, and then walk one town over and join up with someone on a quest for bloody revenge or to steal artifacts.

Everything I see in the Octopath Traveller demo makes me want them to use that engine to remake FFVI for Switch.

There's a break system similar to Xenosaga 2's down system. However, unlike Xenosaga 2 it doesn't require hits in a specific order and doesn't reset if you hit a non weak point. The flow of combat is also much faster and the characters all have unique abilities.
