Minnesota Uniteds Collin Martin got a huge standing ovation: https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2018/07/04/minnesota-united-fc-fans-give-collin-martin-emotional-standing-ovation

....from the crowd in his first on-field appearance since coming out as gay last week. Hes currently the only out active player in any of the five major male pro sports leagues.

Martin gave an interview in the locker after his first game, at which he stayed on the sidelines.

Said Martin: It was crazy it was overwhelming in a good way. I feel loved and appreciated and supported. It was a special day for me.

When asked how his family reacted, he answered: I think more so they were just probably excited that I told them. I gave them two day notice, I think, and they were super supportive. My mom, I think she was happy that Im being my authentic self and itll help some people hopefully. My dad, more along the business side he just wanted to make sure I was telling the team, telling the right people, that they were gonna support me and that I was doing it the right way.

Of the reaction of the public, he replied: I didnt know that it was gonna be that big.

Isn't it crazy how fast society has changed for the better? Can you imagine if a soccer player had come out like ten years ago? I doubt they would have received the same reception that Collin Martin did.

Probably because the world of sports is still rife with homophobia.

That's slowly changing though.

One day when people come out, it probably won't even be a big deal. But we're not there yet.

So were supposed to applaud for someone announcing theyre attracted to penis?

Wheres the applause for the rest of the players who announce that they like vagina. Oh wait maybe its because they dont feel the need to announce their sexual orientation.

In most cases, applauding someone simply for their sexual preference is ridiculous, but to be openly gay in the sports' world takes massive balls. You open yourself up to all sorts of bigotry from rowdy fans to macho homophobes in the locker room.

The fact that he's the only one out and the first in 2018 should tell you just how big a deal it is.

I see. I didn't realize being gay was such a big deal in the world of soccer. I guess I was under the impression that being gay is pretty well accepted in most places now.

I understand it definitely does take courage, and there's no good reason for anyone to hate you just because you're gay; that's ridiculous.

Another curiosity I have on this topic... Why do people feel the need to come out publicly? Isn't your sexuality something personal that you generally keep out of your professional life? I understand the need to come out to your close friends and family, but to the public, or in a professional environment?

Even if that dude is trolling (not saying he is cause I don't know him well enough) I'm glad he posted because there are totally people out there who do think that way and maybe just don't realize why it's a big deal. They may not even have anything against gay people, they might just not be aware of the whole situation since being openly gay in American society these days isn't viewed as anything noteworthy.

Everyone should be proud of their lifestyle, otherwise they're doing something wrong. If your lifestyle doesn't match your convictions, you need to make a change.

Again, you clearly have a very wrong idea of who I am. I'd be happy to get to know you. PM me. Most people are decent people. Getting to know each other usually nurtures a mutual respect. Making assumptions about someone creates animosity.

If you took some time to think about it, you'd figure this out for yourself. When you're in a public position like this, coming out is empowering to other people. Other gay people won't feel as alienated in the sports community if they see high profile people like this come out and are accepted. That's why him getting applauded is a big deal.

But no, the average person doesn't really have much reason to out themselves to anyone but close family and friends.

In soccer it's still common for fans to throw bananas onto the pitch when a black guy is taking a corner. We're not talking about the most socially progressive bunch here.

Turn your last question on its head. Imagine if someone at your work casually asked you if you had a boyfriend and you had to lie and say yes you did, because admitting you had a girlfriend is so socially unacceptable it could make you a social pariah or get you fired.

So "coming out" isn't about wearing a rainbow shirt and acting like the world's biggest fairy in everyone's faces. It's really just about being able to admit it without it being a problem.

It's fortunately getting to the point where fewer people are needing to "come out" like it's a big reveal and it's trending to be more them just simply not hiding it. At least in Hollywood and stuff, but again, sports are different.

It's important to have people in the public eye come out as a sign that there's nothing wrong with being gay. Even with as small a following as American soccer has, even if just one young fan that happens to be gay (or hell, even an older one) sees a major league player come out, it sends the message that there is nothing to hide. It's even better when that person is shown acceptance which seems to be the case here. It's a big deal because you would never see this happen just around a decade ago.

We shouldn't need anyone's sexual orientation to be newsworthy, but we're still working towards homosexuality being a thing that's perceived as normal by society. Every step forward is progress and the more meaningless each "X comes out as gay" story seems to be, the closer we are to it not being a big deal whatsoever, which is the goal here.
