Like, in today's time and age we have people bitching nonstop about incomplete games and paying for expansions, DLCs and extra content. And yet we had a half made game in Xenogears back in the 90s and almost everyone loved it.

at least they did their best to get all the story they wanted to tell in the game, even if you had characters literally sitting in chairs talking about it. The story was good enough for me to not mind though.

Still, would have loved to see what could have been if their funding didn't run out.

This is like people claiming Dark Souls isnt a masterpiece because the 2nd half areas like Demon Ruins and Lost Izalith clearly suffered from budget/time constraints.

That's literally almost every fighting game these days. They all get shit on pretty badly for it but not Xenogears. Xenogears gets the biggest pass in the world and people will go into semantics to try and justify why it gets a pass as you can see in this very topic.

The game is so ambitious they couldnt finish it. The first disc alone is more epic and has more content than most "complete" games.

And similar to Dark Souls, the quality of the 2nd half isnt nearly as bad as people on the internet like to exaggerate it is. I enjoyed the 2nd disc.

Human fighting and leveling becomes useless when fighting in mechs gives you like 20x the exp and money. Equipment means almost nothing in the game for humans. Characters are shit, Fei is another emo character created by Square. 30(or more) minutes of unskippable dialogues and just talking about shit that can't charm you to relate to the game. A stupid grand plot that confuses the players and doesn't make any god damn sense to make it look real complex and symbolic.

I'd love them to re-release the game fully developed. Same graphics, disc 1 stuff basically the same, but I'd love for them to flesh out the second disc.

I still think it's a great game. But I do take away a point and a half for disc two so I'm not making excuses. The game only gets an 8.5/10 because of the second disc and other problems.

I think Developer Cooperation ramping up to bring Xenogears back as there has been a few odd choices lately.

One of the Staff is currently making a new Manga directly from the source material, and there as been some new Figma Figures directly from Xenogears as well.

Reason I say Developer Cooperation is because SE no longer owns Xenogears, and it's right back with it's owner so looks like some of the original developers might be doing something currently.

Well they did focus on the highlight of the game, which was the story. That alone made the unfinishedness acceptable to a lot of people including me. A lot of us however realize that the game could've been so much more regardless. If it had been completely finished, I would say that it would be my favorite game of all time.

Even taking out all the infamous glitches and bugs, the story is one of the worst in the franchise, the missions were boring and the gameplay mechanics were steps back from the previous set of games

Fun fact, @Abyssea disc two isn't the way it is because of their funding being cut but because they were running out of time.

Xenogears, widely considered one of the greatest role-playing games ever made, has long felt to fans like an unfinished product thanks to its controversial, seemingly unfinished second disc. Although western gamers have assumed that the team simply ran out of money, the real storyas revealed by director Tetsuya Takahashi to Kotaku todayis a little more nuanced.

Whereas the first disc of Xenogears is a sprawling role-playing game, full of towns and dungeons and beautiful cut-scenes, the second disc takes a different approach. Disc 2 of Xenogears chooses to tell rather than show the games epic finale, putting main characters Fei and Elly in a dark room and having them narrate the games climactic events while a slideshow plays on a screen in front of them. Its an unusual and jarring change of pace.

Conventional wisdom has long been this: Square ran out of money and rushed the team, forcing Tetsuya Takahashi to put Xenogears second half together with duct tape. Fans have always believed that Takahashi had more ambitious plans but was forced to ditch them because of budget and time issues.

As far as I can tell, however, theres been no official explanation since Xenogears was released 19 years ago. So while interviewing Takahashi during E3 in Los Angeles today about his new game, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (more on that soon), I had to slip in a question about that urban legend. Xenogears is one of my favorite games, I said, but what happened to that second disc?

Honestly speaking, what had happened is Xenogears as a project was staffed pretty much entirely out of new staff members, young staff members, said Takahashi, speaking through a translator. Back then, we had the direction of, All projects take two years and thats when we need to get it done. So on top of developing the game, we had to nurture and teach and grow these younger employees. Things like 3D were extremely new, which led to some delays in the schedule. It just wasnt possible to get everything done.

As it became clear that Takahashi and team werent going to hit their deadlines, Squares higher-ups suggested that they just end the game after the first disc, when Fei and his team escape from Solaris.

It was a rough way to end it, and I felt like if we do that, then the players will not be satisfied, Takahashi told me. So we had a proposalI proposed that if we do disc 2 in this way that it turned out to be, we can finish the game with the current number of staff and the current time allotted for the schedule and the remaining budget we have.

So they turned disc 2 of Xenogears into the montage that shipped with todays game. Instead of playing through events like the worlds mutation and the search for Fei, you just have to watch them. And it was Takahashis decisionso he could finish the story he wanted to tell rather than cutting it off after the first half.

I do think my decision was the right one to make, said Takahashi. Because if we had just ended at Disc 1 it would have been bad.
