I just don't see how I would be a better person without them. Now I can look at my mantlepiece and remember the rec leagues I played in fondly. What's the problem?

I don't have a problem with them either. It's nice to get a cool looking reminder of playing a sport, and it's not like anyone uses them for bragging rights. It's just a cool momento.

I liked participation trophies when I was a kid. To me it was a memento of being a part of something. I was on this team in this year. I never cared all that much about championships and all that crap. I was just there to have fun.

i thought of them as souvenirs and reminders that i did the thing years later. i never thought of them as bad but then again they weren't made a huge deal when i got one for soccer leagues and basketball stuff i did.

I actually don't think I got any participation awards. But I don't see the problem with them. They are mementos, as described. That's pretty neat.

That's surprising. I thought literally every youth soccer league in the 90s had participation trophies.

Kids know the participation trophy means they stuck with it and went to practice and played the games and all that.

I don't know where modern parents have gotten this idea that a participation trophy means you won or whatever it is they think.

I have zero participation trophies cause when I got a trophy it was due to actually placing in a competition.

Have 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place trophies for my accomplishments, when I was placing we thankfully never had participation trophies.

I got a participation trophy for my baseball playing days. My team lost every single game except for one. We were so bad that we made the local newspaper.

I never really want to do another spet again after that. I did do track and field in high school but I quit after seeing the $500+ fee.

No one actually thinks this. It's just adults assuming that kids are stupid enough to somehow think that getting a trophy will automatically make them feel like they're awesome at whatever they got the trophy for, even though they can clearly see that everyone else got the same trophy.

Why?

I just loathed the idea of a pity trophy.

I mean, I already had trophies for placing in the top 3 in my room for other sports. Having a trophy with no number next to it just felt wrong and out of place, so without anywhere to put it I just tossed it

My district was really smart with the whole "memento" thing, we got framed team pictures instead of participation trophies. The money that would've been spent on trophies went towards gear or team dinners.

It's kinda stupid since the trophies are cheap plastic and take up space with little to no meaning. Looking at the pictures brings back a ton of memories cus my whole team is there in each one.

I don't have trophies, but I have a bunch of medals from swim competitions when I was in high school and on a club team.

They represent accomplishment by winning a competition.

Showing up is not an accomplishment nor is it competitive.

It is actually kind of weird to me that you care more about something just because it showed you were good at something years ago relative to your peers.

I don't see the value in that at all. I just remember having good times, fighting with the ref that one time in basketball, etc. The memories they recall are valuable, not the outcome of some games I played 20 years ago

:(

I just didn't do a lot of activities that were casual and fun, primarily because of competitive soccer. Even so much that I had to lie and hide that I secretly played for my high school's soccer team because if my competitive trainers and coaches found out, I would have been in trouble.

And they were right, I got injured really bad during a high school game, but it was one of the only teams where it was just fun.

Aw geez. I'm sorry Ash. :(

Depends on what it is. Showing up to a marathon and finishing even dead last is an accomplishment most people wouldn't even try to attempt in their life

Same here, that's why I keep stuff like that in a nicely organized bin labeled "nostalgia box." -- It's got medals, trophies, old soccer tourney t-shirts, concert tickets, photos, etc.

yeah, i used to have something like that too. eventually decided i didn't even need the physical objects anymore, and i really dislike clutter.

Yeeeah, although I would say that a participation trophy in the case of a marathon would be equivalent to getting a trophy/medal even if you didn't run the whole way.

I don't know why people get upset over little "I was there" souvenirs. If it's as big and grand and flashy as the ones given to the people who placed, maybe it'd be a problem.
