If the company wants to pay him to show up at a meeting he doesn't need to be at, that's not his problem.

you make the big bucks once you learn how to leverage entire teams into a more productive state. optimizing meetings is an easy way to do that.

example: if a company is reimbursing expenses while working out of state and you find a hotel that is the same quality but 50% cheaper and closer to the work site, you end up saving the company a ton of money and time (which means more money) because of the leverage you gave to the entire team that is staying at that hotel. which means you can justify a bigger paycheck.

read the book The Effective Engineer

the concept of leverage is not a new one, and plenty of others who have high impact careers will give you the same advice. it isn't about stepping on anyone's toes, it's about being mindful about how you can do things better as a team.

if you have time to be on gamefaqs during this meeting, that means it's not that important and it's just wasting resources. it also means that the people presenting will notice that you're on your phone/laptop instead of paying attention, which is what the real stepping on the feet is. simply suggesting making meetings more efficient isn't going to hurt unless you do it in a really rude way.
