Did they steal this idea from Himym lol? I'm watching a few minutes of it and it follows Johnny lawrence apparently being quite close to a bum. Lol what?

It's a good show. Characters are written well, and it has a lot of that 90s, 00s vibe to it like Boy meets world.

Wasn't his family part of the country club? A kid with parents that have that kinda wealth don't really end up as bums... and is that his car from the first movie because no way it can survive 30 years.

It's shown he has a bad relationship with his step dad and his mom is dead

It's a very good series though. It feels like a natural progression of the story

Is the show depressing throughout? First 10 minutes and I'm like ugh, really don't want to see an aged old man beating up a bunch of kids (mobsters/bullies though they may be)

Which sounds weird since I was fine with it in the original movie and the garbage remake that had a sympathetic enjoyable performance by Jackie chan (and crappy everything else)

There are downers, but it pays off. It's ultimately a feel good show imo.

Yeah a lot of it is about Johnny's growth as a person. The series focuses heavily on Daniel as well.

Weird of Daniel to do something gimmicky like turn his karate chopping and bonsai treeing into an ad for selling cars, especially with how car salesmen in shows are usually portrayed as, generally underhanded and gross.

Don't know if it would be considered embarrassing because people might see you and forever associate you with those cheesy commercials, like that wiz king episode of seinfeld. But bravo if he doesn't feel self conscience about that.

I still can't get over this originally being a joke in a CBS show of all things, but am curious and want to see more because I just love karate kid so much.

Next episode seems to be an interesting perspective.

Wonder why Johnny didn't confront Daniel about the daughter being in the car that crashed into his car. That's weirdly noble? Or maybe it's just the old school philosophy he probably sticks to of snitches get stitches.

Ok 2nd episode is starting off better, I'm loving johnny's reaction to modern day pc crap and telling the kid to be quiet. I'm actually for pc crap (if it actually eliminated bullies) but just find johnny's responses to "this shit" in his eyes to be hilarious.

And that "illegal I picked up this morning" line XD !

The movie has always been about the guys, so I don't know if she would really have much of a role or part to play in the story.

I'm so glad that when larusso was reminiscing it wasn't about the time spent with his high school girlfriend (which would be awful) but instead was remembering being a father to his daughter and teaching her self defense and stuff. That was a lot more touching and fitting.

It kinda paints the original Cobra Kais in a new light.

While they were the bullies in the original film, in this series they start out as nerds who later become bullies, implying the original Cobra Kais were possibly the same way and changed under the bad influence of Kreese.

Daniel was the real bully.

But seriously, after re watching the original movie, I've come to the conclusion that both Daniel and Johnny are assholes who are quick to anger and resort to violence. In Cobra Kai they seem to of gotten their short tempers under control, but are still assholes.

The whole Daniel being the real bully thing is a meme that needs to go away lol. Johnny was the main aggressor throughout the movie.

Daniel admittedly did have anger issues that didn't help the situation but that sounds like victim blaming.

The only time Daniel was the aggressor was the hose thing, but that was more of a harmless prank than an attack and Johnny took it too far.

Not really, since it was the 80s. The trope here is similar to... to what 2012's 21 jump street did, where what's seen as cool and lame has completely changed from the previous decade or 2. Similarly, we can see today that nerds can be bullies and jocks can be kind friendly souls. The traditional 80s archetype of nerd, jock, burnout etc as seen in the classic movie the breakfast club has become a mishmash of all the different stereotypes.

You could interpret it that way, yeah, but I still think there's evidence that implies that the Cobras weren't necessarily bad kids to begin with. There's a flashback where we see Johnny before he joins Cobra Kai. He's shown to be a bit of a wimp and mama's boy. He's clearly not the same after being in Cobra Kai for a while. It changed him.

That's minor spoilers.

Ah I see what they did. The first 2 episodes are free to hook you in, and then they make you pay for the rest of the season. I was so confused when I thought my youtube app had glitched (again) and was displaying an entire episode of a show I was sure was pay-to-view.

Nice of youtube to not region lock it, if nothing else. Still have to wait until I get back to see it though.
