I played this game for a really long time when I was like 5 or 6 and looking back I'm not sure I ever even solved a single puzzle

Oh yeah, same. Exact same, actually - I played it a ton around 6-7 and never made it anywhere, but the world was so interesting that I didn't care. Same with Riven - I'd walk to the third island, realize I've done nothing whatsoever, and give up.

It was only later that things started making sense.

isn't a lot of the game locked though until you solve a few things? I only remember like 7-8 distinct screens

I dunno how I even played it for that long

Well...sort of. Most of the content is on four other island, but the starting island has a puzzle for accessing each of them. So there's still quite a bit to do there, along with checking out the books on the shelf which detail small bits of each island and give clues as to what's gonna happen there.

I didn't even care about that. It was just the world itself being presented which fascinated little-kid me. Considering the alternative was Super Mario World sprites, seeing something which looked like an actual world was amazing.

Grabbed by the Ghoulies
I played this game a lot on my original Xbox back in, like, 2003 or so? I was still a kid at that point. I really enjoyed the "cozy" feel of the game. It was also pretty good gameplay-wise. The funny thing about this game is that, despite it being marketed more to kids, it was still hard as balls in the latter parts of the game. Surprisingly, I was able to beat it as a kid. Years later, when I had access to the internet, I found out that most people hated this game and I was honestly surprised. The game wasn't bad at all, and it was kind of charming. Oh well.

Halo 2
This game is the only game I ever LAN'd, and it was a blast. I had it on the OG Xbox and, because I didn't have internet or XBL at the time, LAN was my only go to. 4v4 with my friends and family was some of the best times I've ever had with a multiplayer games. Also, dual wielding was incredibly fun.

Dungeons and Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun
Okay. This game right here is the absolute worst game to ever have as your first game ever. I would know, because it was. Mine and my brother's first console was a Sega Genesis, and this was the first game we got for it (both we found at a yard sale). Needless to say, it was a confusing, albeit interesting, introduction to games. What made it horrible was the difficulty and the fact that you needed at least a passing understanding of RPG mechanics to play it. The only thing other than that which sticks out to me is that there is a waterfall on the northern most part of the world map that houses a seahorse dragon thing. That was the farthest I ever got in this game. I kind of want to play it again.

Also, the soundtrack is 10/10.

Riven
Take everything Myst did, and turn it up to 11. The world is bigger (in the sense that most of it is interconnected, rather than separated by portals of a sort). The atmosphere is more oppressive. And godDAMN are the puzzles more obtuse. Myst's puzzles are mostly restricted to each island - the stuff in one Age usually doesn't bleed into another. In Riven, nearly all the work you're doing is in some way connected to one of two major puzzles. And don't expect to ever get all the information you need - you will need to use process of elimination to fill in gaps where they don't give you everything.

It might sound like I'm bashing the game, but I'm not. I adore it. This is the kind of shit that I love. This game is basically a massive test of your attention to detail - get one single thing wrong, and you're screwed until you go back to check it again. Not only that but the worldbuilding is spectacular; Riven is such an interesting place to be.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky

I primarily play the main Pokemon games because they're simple RPGs with a colorful cast of characters and interesting monsters to raise. So basically they're comfort food. With Pokemon Mystery Dungeon though, you have to leave that mindset at the door, because you're here to get your story on. The PMD games are games that you play for the story more than for the gameplay, and the story of Explorers of Sky in particular is actually pretty damn good. This is one of those games where I'll strongly recommend it just because the story is really good, even if you're not a fan of the franchise or Roguelikes. I don't care how you play this game, just fucking play it, yo.

That was a total slog of a run. Four Job Fiesta, Black Mage/Berserker/Geomancer/Dragoon
Basically, Black Mage provided everything. The raw power to nuke things to death before my complete lack of healing killed me(never before have I used so many freaking potions, tents, and cottages. I'd buy Potions x99 at a time. I nearly cried when I could buy Hi-Potions). It powered the Berserker's Rune Axe. It gave Dragoon something to do, because lances and Dragoons are meh. It couldn't redeem Geomancer, but good God, it tried.

In any case, I had to cheese the hell out of Neo-ExDeath as I have never had to before. I spammed Break until I got lucky(after four wipes) and killed the part that casts Almagest. I grabbed the Thief Knife and hunted Crystal Dragons until I managed to get a Dragon Lance so my Dragoon could murder the part that casts Grand Cross. I used the Magic Lamp to kill a 3rd-part with Odin. Even then, my team was bloodied and battered, and Faris ate it to a double Vacuum Wave.
All that after grinding a good half-dozen levels. This party was bad.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
The controls are kind of alright. The magic system is unremarkable. The plot, while interesting enough for a Lovecraftian love story, is also kinda meh in the end.

And it's still amazing. One major aspect of horror that a lot of games get wrong is actually being scary, and this game takes a very unique approach to that. This game just fucks with you constantly, and in ways more inventive than 99.99999% of horror games would have ever considered. This alone makes it worth playing.

One example of this stands out to me in particular, and that's the bathtub jumpscare. You know the one. It's the first jumpscare the game throws at you, and it's also the only one. You aren't expecting such an overtly...cheap thing to happen, especially when you're halfway through the game, and that's why it's such a perfectly executed example of this game wanting to make you uneasy. Once that happens, you're going to be wary of any "Inspect" prompt that shows up on something. This team understands horror games like few others truly do.

I LOVE the class system and combat in this FF moreso than every other 2d FF. Super underrated game.

Final Fantasy 9
This game and Bioshock are tied for first in my top ten games ever list. This game is so. Damn. Good. It takes everything great about all the Final Fantasy games that preceded it and puts it all into one very nice package. The soundtrack is phenomenal, the characters are all excellent and relatable, and the graphics, for their time/console, were great. There are a few issues in this game that I personally have, but the pure enjoyment I got from this game has not been matched.

Let's put it this way: one of the major aspects of the world is its base-5 number system. You have exactly two clues to figure that out: a random little two-person game in a classroom which outright tells you the numbers, and the fact that one of the villagers opens her door if you knock on it exactly five times.

It's that kind of obtuse - not outright insane troll logic where things literally make no sense, but you need to take notes on things in order to get to the end.

Have you heard of / played la-mulana? it's a 2D platforming(?) sort of game where you're an archeologist exploring this giant labyrinth of interconnected ruins. I have't played Riven so I dunno how apt the comparison is but these sentences really sound like something I'd say about la mulana too

Player deals less damage, takes more damage, has half as much max HP as other modes, gains less EXP than other modes, and you even get the option to play the entire game at level 1. Let's just say that there's a reason KH2 introduced an ability that prevents you from dying while being comboed.

Wild ARMs was my shit for a good couple of years when I was a kid. It was probably my real introduction into RPGs even though I didn't get into the genre until several years later with FFX. But man, the music and intro/ending was amazing. I remember drawing that cross with the crystal teardrop necklace over and over in middle school in my notebooks, it was such a cool image to me.

Mark of the Ninja

It's a 2D stealth platformer that is very adamant about playing it stealthily. The Marked Ninja can technically fight back if caught, but it goes about as well as you'd expect a ninja fighting gun wielding opponents to be. You get a ton of fun tools to use to distract or kill enemies as needed, and unlockable costumes that can radically change the way you play. For example, while you'd normally hide bodies to prevent an alarm from being raised when discovered, you can instead wear the Path of Nightmares costume to terrify each guard into killing each other whenever they see a dead body. Or you could even try to kill no people at all! It's got a ton of options for keeping the gameplay diverse while sticking to its guns in a very satisfying way. I 100% completed this game and I loved every minute of it.
