Wild Arms 2
I played this game a lot as a kid in elementary school. At the time, I loved JRPGs. My mom took us to the local flea market one Saturday and, despite the fact that we were broke, she allowed my brother and I to get 1 video game. We decided on Wild Arms 2 based solely on the game art. We were happily surprised that it was a JRPG, and the wild west setting was interesting to us at the time. The music was good, graphics decent, and the characters were pretty good. I don't really remember the story sticking out much, but I also don't have negative memories of it.

How is it the greatest though? It most definitely is one of the most influential, best puzzle games of course.

I've played 2 and 3 extensively. No, you don't need to play any of the others to play a specific one.

I played the first Wild Arms and remember liking it a lot, but by the time I had access to the sequels it had been long enough that I forgot the story and was kind of bored of JRPGs in general.

The soundtrack is still great, though.

Mister Mosquito
PS2 game where you play as a mosquito and fly around a family's house sucking their blood. The family gradually loses their mind as the levels progress. There's also a stupidly fun secret 2-player minigame unlocked from the main menu, where two guys on bicycles have to bump each other off a tower.

Your favorite one sucks the most.

It seems like a lot of newer sequels (Fallout 4, Skyrim, Zelda etc...) take lots of steps forward but a few important ones back. Not bad games but those steps back really stop them from being amazing.

A fun little PS1 game that is far more fun than it had any right to be. I recommend everyone look it up if you like a bit of dungeon crawling fused with randomly generated floors and kinda a digimon/pokemon creature system.

That game was so bizarre to me as a kid. I remember reading about it in a magazine in Winn Dixie and was like wtf? Never did play it.

Baby Pac-Man
Really hard version of Pac-Man with a mini-pinball machine attached. You have to guide Baby Pac-Man into a special tunnel (that closes off after you use it) that activates the pinball game. Doing well there is the only way to earn power pellets as there aren't any on the board to begin with. The ghosts behave differently than they do in other Pac-Man games, changing directions whenever they want and generally being much tougher to avoid.

Donkey Kong 64
When I was just a 7 year old twerp, we only had a Sega Genesis to share that only worked when it wanted to, but it was great for us. For my sister's 11th birthday, she got an N64 and two games: Starfox 64 and DK64. Both games were amazing to me as before the most impressive game I had played graphically was Sonic 3. However, DK64 holds a more interesting place in my childhood because of its necessary exclusive ex-pack. My mom and I drove around the city for a good 3 hours going to all the different blockbusters around trying to find the right ex-pack to buy. And it was amazing when we finally got it because DK64 was the first game that I could consider open world with lots of things to do. I sunk weeks of my summer that year into that game. Ironically, I don't really like the game any more.

Robot Alchemic Drive

Okay this is kinda more of an "Is this game worth hunting down?" post because I only ever played the demo of it. One really charming thing I remember about this game is that the giant robots are exclusively controlled from an outside perspective with, well, a controller. So half the battle ended up being just looking for a safe vantage point that also gives you a clear view of the battle. Anyone ever play this?

Steambot Chronicles
The only reason I remember this game is because my brother had it for his PS2 in his early teens and was always trying to get me to play it too. The game had, in my opinion, the worst controls for any game I've ever played. Everything else about the game was pretty decent: graphics, characters, story. But the controls for the combat and gameplay was just atrocious. My brother loved it, though, and still talks about this game every once in a while.

I can kinda see what they were going for. It's literally some amnesiac schmuck piloting a machine with somewhat complicated controls for the first time. It's a bit clunky at first, but once you get used to it you'll be zipping around like a pro. Story's good enough that I can recommend giving it one last attempt.

Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-Revis
This is one of the few games that I will expressly admit to being mediocrity personified. Everything about this game was a cliche party basket of JRPG and anime tropes from ages gone. But, despite this fact, I actually enjoyed this game in a mindless, grind-y kind of way. Ironically, my brother bought this game because he is very much into these types of RPGs, whereas I am not. He hated it, but I enjoyed it.

Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc
First game I ever played on the PS2. My grandmother bought this game for me as a b-day gift from Sam's Club (you know old people and their Sam's Club love). I had played Rayman 2 on the N64 and really enjoyed it, so I thought I would like this one too. I didn't. It wasn't bad by any means, but it felt, I don't know, off? Like it was lacking something important. I hated some of the minigames too.

Heh, I literally got this game just because I was in my JRPG phase at the time. As far as JRPG combat goes, the combat is at least a top 10 for me. I just love how fast-paced it is, the combat never really felt boring to me. I remember the true final boss being kind of a fucker though. I mean, really game? You're really gonna disable my healing late into the final boss fight? Real mature, game.

God of War
Heh. The thing that stands out to me the most about this game is the sex and boobies minigame at the beginning of the game while still on the boat. The reason? My mom walked in on me playing the game at that exact point. I was just as shocked as she was but that didn't stop me from getting a whooping.

Parasite Eve 3rd Birthday
Its not very parasite eve-ish, but as someone who hates shooting games, I had a lot of fun with it. Body swapping was tense, especially during boss fights; watching your old body get torn apart. Then there were DNA/skills (materia-esque) and choices for gun upgrades.

Banjo Kazooie
Childhood personified. I loved every single thing about this game as a kid, almost. The graphics, music, levels, gameplay. Since back then there was no internet at my house and I couldn't get answers to everything, I had to figure everything out by myself. I spent countless hours inputting words in the sand castle, trying to find all the jiggies, notes, jinjos, etc., and I loved every minute of it. Except for Rusty Bucket Bay. Fuck that level.

Cultist Simulator
Some weird newish game I playeda few weeks ago. It's clearly inspired by lovecraft and other "secrets man was not meant to know" type settings. You're just some guy who gets in a little too deep, founds a cult, and starts trying to unravel the mysteries of the arcane. Mostly sticks in my mind because of one really gutsy decision by the devs: it has no tutorial at all. You're dumped into this game full of bizarre and complex interactions between different pieces with basically no explanation to what anything does or how anything works. You'll inevitably die a few times trying to just figure out what is going on or what your goal even is. But I think it fits perfectly here, because as your playfield gets more and more cluttered with books and lore and accomplices, you're scrambling for a way to earn money just so you don't die, and you're lost in a big sea of information, you really do feel like that lone cultist guy who just got way in over his head with things too complex for any one person to comprehend.

Anyone else ever play games that did something like this where most people would consider it bad (like in this case, not explaining things), but were better off for it?

Myst
You're a person of indeterminate sex who somehow enters a book, transporting you to an island where you're left to figure out what the fresh hell is going on here. You receive only just barely enough information to let you know what's going on. The rest of it is on you, your eyes, and your brain.

Mechanically the game is brilliant, but it's the world created here which really makes the experience worthwhile. As with the mechanics, you receive the story of this world almost exclusively with your eyes. Nothing is explained fully to you - you receive pieces at most, and you're left to put the puzzle together yourself.

Banjo-Kazooie

It still blows my mind that the Stop 'n' Swop secrets stayed hidden for so long. I remember magazines, strategy guides, and even the internet teasing things like the Ice Key and Sharkfood Island, but nobody actually knew how to get them. Not even the GameShark had codes for them iirc. I didn't believe it when they were revealed years later, but sure enough, I was able to break out the old N64 and get them.

Never really like Tooie as much. Went too overboard with the level size, backtracking, splitting up, etc.

B-K on XBLA was mildly disappointing in a way too, even though it was technically better. Kids playing that for the first time will never know the struggle of dying while searching for the 100th note and having to do it all over again, or spending hours trying to get a collectible that you can't get.
