Lit prior to 2014 was a word that one would use to describe their status of being high on weed.
For some unknown reason, people started to use it for describing something that was cool.

I've seen/heard people using "lit" as being drunk. Confused the hell out of me

being lit to me back in the day usually meant being drunk, but not too drunk to remember what you did

From my experience, lit was more of a general term for relatively inebriated, be it drugs or alcohol.

"lit up"

doesn't have to do with just weed, just means being high. I've most often heard it regarding coke

I've never once heard someone use it in that sense. Though most people I know who do coke are of an entirely different demographic, so that could be why

even think about the term dope

old people use dope as a generic term for drugs

that isnt how anyone under the age of 50 uses that term any more though, even if they are referring to drugs it is now much more specific about the type of drug it means

As long as lit is used to describe being high on drugs, its being used correctly.
Its awkward to use it for drinking.
