I dont really play indies (not out of principle, just typically dont) and also usually am not a Metroidvania guy. Heard the universal praise, though, and decided hey, for $15, Ill give it a shot.

Its really incredible. It deserves the love. Im trying to describe it without just comparing it Dark Souls a bunch, but it really invites the comparison in a lot of positive ways... not even in gameplay so much as in the well, this place sure went to hell atmosphere, eerily vague NPC interactions, and cohesiveness of the map/game world. There are mechanic similarities too, like getting back to your body to recover currency, but the vibe is much deeper than that. Theres even some pretty clear homages bottom line is it just makes me FEEL like a Souls game makes me feel. Haunting, creepy, beautiful, sad, occasionally darkly funny, lots of lore, and constantly surprising with ohhh, THIS place! moments.

The gameplay is tight as hell too, real good platforming and super fun builds for combat. Unique and cool abilities gained at unexpected times.

Also, its fucking huge! Im still just in the base game, and while Ive heard others move through it much faster, Im easily gonna get 30+ hours before I hit the end because Im backtracking a ton to explore and going totally blind, then theres 100%ing, then theres all the free DLC with more coming...

It might be the best value Ive ever gotten in gaming at $15. Im playing on Switch and its incredible to have it on the TV or on the go but PC works too.

Might be the best Metroidvania that isnt Shantae and the Pirates Curse

Im a big Switch advocate but you cant go wrong either way. That said, I personally wouldnt use a Steam sale as my deciding factor since full price is a whopping $15

If anything, when Ive seen Souls and Hollow Knight compared elsewhere and someone mentions difficulty, thats the one part I dont actually agree with.

Its definitely tough at times but not really in the same ways Souls is. The majority of my deaths have been platforming related, only a couple bosses have stonewalled me so far. Ive heard it gets pretty gnarly later on though. Still, its Dark Souls because its hard is always a silly comp.

Dunno if youre joking but either way, I typically dont play indies either. This is about as good of a Metroidvania as Ive ever seen. Its big-league developer quality.

I cannot fucking believe this game had a Kickstarter, speaking of which. Its one of the best games Ive played in years.

I'm reallay glad I got this game too. Had no interest from what I saw on PC, but paid attention to it once I found out it was on switch, and so many people praised it to hell and back when it came out for switch so i got it.

about 20 hours in and i feel like there is another 20 hours left for me, mostly because i suck and die a lot and need to backtrack.

i wish it would tell you to use your dream nail or whatever on those bodies resting on the tables. i came across them and didn't do that because it just shows interact and they asleep.

It's not compared to Dark Souls solely because of its difficulty. I think it's actually compared to it so often because of their similar use of storytelling. Also, the Shade is pretty similar to bloodstains.

it's clearly intended to be similar to dark souls, so yeah the comparisons are basically all on-point

I think it plays perfectly fine on PC, if you usually game on PC I would not fuss a ton over whether to do switch version or not since PC is good too

Loving it so far as well. My only real gripe is the two death system in annoying areas. Trying to do the enemy bouncing challenge room in the deep area was just super annoying because the shade spawns half way into the room and it took me like ten tries to not screw up.

I agree with TC. Hollow Knight is insanely good.

Beat the game with 30 hours in, 71% completion though so lots left to do.

Im on Trial of the Fool right now and getting murdered after doing very well with the first two, but hey. Endgame challenge.

I enjoy Hollow Knight. I'm not far because I don't have much time to game, and when I do I'm playing Yakuza 0, but God damn the music and sound effects are great. The basic enemies provide a challenge at times, and the areas are great. Screw exploring without a map though. I went into the foresty area without one and almost quit cuz I couldn't find my spirit to get like 3000 orbs back.

Legitimately one of the best Metroidvanias I've ever played.

The game largely feels as if it has the perfect difficulty level (I feel challenged, but am able to figure out what mistakes I made and can correct them eventually) but final boss of the Grimm Troupe DLC is absurd. I know it is memorizing their patterns and reacting accordingly, but the amount of time you're given to react is so small at times.

The music for the fight is 10/10 tho (most of the games music is.)

That was the hardest boss in the game for me. Felt like I was just throwing myself into a wall over and over again. And while bosses later in the game are technically more difficult, they are very satisfying battles, and you can feel yourself improving with each attempt. Lost Kin wasn't like that.

That was the hardest boss in the game for me. Felt like I was just throwing myself into a wall over and over again. And while bosses later in the game are technically more difficult, they are very satisfying battles, and you can feel yourself improving with each attempt. Lost Kin wasn't like that.

I had to give up. I was getting waaaay too angry and it wasn't good for my health. I think you need that stink armor to help with those jellies, because they always floated into you when you needed health. It was just too chaotic, which makes it nigh impossible to adjust because each battle plays out so differently.

They have an absurd amount of health though. Upgrade your nail to the highest level you can get it and it makes things MUCH easier.

Yeah, spore + stink is a great badge combo because it gives your heal a (surprisingly decent) dot attack with a large aoe

I use that combo in lots of fights. It was really useful against the Watcher Knights (boss guarding one of the dreamers)

There are three pale ore upgrades at least

1 ore (channeled)
2 ore (spiral)
3 ore (don't know yet, need more ore lol)

For at least 6 ore total in the game
