They held the ball for ages, but their actual attempts on goal were pathetic. Russia played a perfect strategy. They knew they couldn't properly compete with Spain, so their best bet was to keep numbers back and stymie Spain's offense. Spain played right into their hands like fools by playing footsie the entire game with hardly any proper attacking. Once you get to PKs it's anybody's game, which is where Russia knew they had their best chance, and then they capitalized on it whereas Spain choked hard. Kudos to the Russian team. They did good. A lot of great goals, few surprises, debuting players shining (Mbapp, Kane, Torreira, Coutinho) and overall an amazing tournament. That, plus the fact that everytime Marcelo transitions to attack ends up leaving huge spaces, could make for a good chance for Mexico to even go 2-0.
